Whether you're running on the field or shouting in the stands, everyone is a Flyer. The University of Dayton has a storied tradition of athletic glory, and, without a doubt, the best fans in the country. In athletics, the University brings its best — and it brings the noise.
Varsity Sports
Our University of Dayton intercollegiate sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the Atlantic 10 conference (except for the football team, which competes in the I-AA non-scholarship Pioneer Football League).

Flyer teams distinguish themselves nationally. In all, 412 teams have represented the A-10 in postseason action since the conference was formed in 1997.

Fan Experience
Flyers show their spirit with cheerful ferocity, led by the University's rowdy and beloved mascot, Rudy Flyer, dressed in early pilot's garb to celebrate Dayton's aviation history. Our entire athletics program draws support from Flyer fanatics, who turn out for everything from volleyball games to football to softball doubleheaders.

The basketball games, though, are when Flyer pride reaches a fever pitch. Red Scare — a student organization of the most die-hard Flyer fanatics — has drawn praise from outsiders and fear from opponents. Our winning basketball tradition has been rewarded with several fan attendance records: a consistent top 30 national rank in fan attendance, 12 straight seasons leading the Atlantic 10 and a record season for total attendance (229,768 fans). UD Arena has hosted 84 NCAA postseason games since opening in 1969, making it the most prolific NCAA Tournament venue. The deafening roar of UD Arena means trouble for opponents, and a little bit of trouble for students' voices the morning after big games.

Intramurals
If you want to play an organized sport, you have plenty of options. Club sports and intramurals are crowd-pleasers at the University, in every sense. More than 70 percent of the student body participates in intramural and club sports alone, playing and competing at a rate higher than even much larger institutions. From volleyball to lacrosse, ice hockey to Ultimate Frisbee, our students field literally hundreds of teams in a wide variety of sports. So sign up, and watch out.
