Foreign Language Education (B.S.)
As a foreign language education major, you may pursue a Bachelor of Science in education (B.S.) from the School of Education and Allied Professions or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from the College of Arts and Sciences through the E-11 program. Regardless of which program you choose, you will receive multi-age licensure, PreK-12, in French, German or Spanish.

In our programs, you will develop real-world proficiency in reading, listening, speaking and writing, as well as learn to work successfully in cross-cultural environments. A variety of learning and language-acquisition opportunities are available, and you are encouraged to spend at least one summer practicing your language skills during an immersion study abroad experience.

To help you hone your skills, the Language Learning Center offers a variety of resources, including international sound tracks, television, DVDs and publications. If you prefer to practice your skills first-hand, you can participate in one-month education abroad programs in France, Germany, Latin America or Spain — or study abroad for a semester or for an entire academic year.

In order to be approved for student teaching and recommended for licensure, you must maintain a 2.5 grade point average overall, both in professional education courses and in your teaching field.

Licensure
The School of Education and Allied Professions is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Generally, Ohio licensure granted in the School of Education and Allied Professions extends to most states. By the end of your first year, you must pass the Praxis I, which assesses reading, writing and mathematics skills. Licensure is contingent on successfully passing a state-mandated exit examination, Praxis II, that tests your knowledge in the principles of learning and teaching, and the content area of specialization. Passing scores for the Praxis II are established by the state of Ohio.

You must also demonstrate a working level of proficiency in the language for which licensure is sought ("advanced-low" on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages oral proficiency scale).

Career Opportunities
When it comes time for you to graduate, Career Services will assist you in securing a teaching position. In some cases, interviews with prospective employers are conducted on campus Most foreign language education graduates have attained teaching positions immediately following graduation, and some have been hired prior to graduation.
