Languages (B.A.)
The internationalization of travel, the arts, media, politics, science and technology, along with the economic interdependence of the world's nations, has increased the demand for the multilingual professional. You can prepare for a successful future by majoring in French, German and Spanish. Courses are also available in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Latin and Russian, and a major in Italian can be arranged.

Our language courses fall into three categories. Language skills courses develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking abilities. Linguistic and language instruction courses provide a foundation for understanding the complexities of language. Finally, literature and culture courses expand your understanding and appreciation of other cultures through literary texts, films, art and history.

To help you hone your skills, the Language Learning Center offers a variety of resources, including international sound tracks, television, DVDs and publications. If you prefer to practice your skills first-hand, you can participate in one-month education abroad programs in Costa Rica, France, Germany or Spain — or study abroad for a semester or for an entire academic year.

As a French, German or Spanish major, you can share your interest in languages and cultures with others with the teaching licensure option. Through the E-11 program, you will fulfill the requirements in the Department of Languages, as well as those designated by the School of Education and Allied Professions for teacher licensure by the state of Ohio. You may also elect to earn a Bachelor of Science in education with multi age licensure, prekindergarten through grade 12, from the School of Education and Allied Professions. Concentrations in French, German and Spanish are available.

Career Opportunities

Your ability to speak proficiently in multiple languages will assist you in whatever career path you choose. We encourage students to complement their language studies with another field such as business, criminal justice studies, education, international studies or social work. These combined degrees prepare you for careers in international business and commerce, banking, civil service, education, law, media, publishing, travel and tourism.
