Mathematics (B.A., B.S.)
The department offers two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). The B.S. prepares you to pursue careers in engineering and science or enter graduate study in any area of the mathematical sciences, including actuarial science and statistics. The B.A. allows you to develop the skills necessary for careers in business, education or the social sciences.
A B.S. in applied mathematical economics is also available, and it provides a foundation in economics, mathematics and statistics needed for careeers in business or government service.
With many graduate programs in mathematics, science and engineering available at UD, you may take advantage of advanced opportunities, including graduate-level course work and cross-disciplinary, team-oriented research experiences, during your junior and senior year.
You can also choose to share your interest in mathematics with students by pursuing the teaching licensure option. You will fulfill the requirements in the Department of Mathematics, as well as those designated by the School of Education and Allied Professions for teacher licensure by the state of Ohio.
Career Opportunities
Our graduates enjoy successful careers in teaching and research, as well as working with business analysts, computer scientists, economists, and engineers. You will also be prepared for graduate studies in mathematics and related fields such as information science, management science, and operations research.
Possible careers include accounting, econometrics, geophysics, law, medicine, operations research, radiophysics and statistics. According to the Jobs Rated Almanac, the top five jobs involve mathematics: actuary, computer analyst, computer programmer, mathematician and statistician.
