Music (B.A.)
Our music programs are as diverse as the interests of our students, and we offer the Bachelor of Music with majors in composition, music education, music therapy or performance, and the Bachelor of Arts with a major in music. A certificate in church music is also available.
Our program provides a strong grounding in the liberal arts while emphasizing music courses. Coursework and hands-on opportunities allow you to grow as a musician while providing the skills you need to work with others in this diverse field.
As part of the curriculum, you will be exposed to music from all eras and all parts of the world, including jazz, popular music and world music. You will be encouraged to learn from music of the past and explore the possibilities inherent in the music of the present and future as you develop aesthetic, creative, critical and intellectual music skills.
Whether you like to sing, play or conduct, there are plenty of opportunities to perform. We offer over a dozen ensembles, including Choral Union, Ebony Heritage Singers, Flyer Pep Band, Pride of Dayton Marching Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, University Chorale, University Concert Band, University Orchestra, and jazz ensembles and combos, as well as vocal and instrumental chamber ensembles. Additional musical opportunities exist through Hands in Harmony (a sign language group), the Opera Workshop, an annual musical stage production and guest artist master classes.
Our music department is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The music therapy program is approved by the American Music Therapy Association, and the music education degree is licensed by the state of Ohio.
Career Opportunities
You will be prepared for a variety of careers involving the study and analysis of musical works, styles and composers. Our graduates have often found success in music criticism, research and library science, and teaching. Careers in composition include teaching, composing and arranging music. Music education graduates are prepared to teach band, choral, classroom or orchestra to students PreK-12. Music therapy graduates work to create positive behavioral changes in individuals. Music performance graduates will take the stage either as soloists or as part of an ensemble.
