Music Education (B.Mus.)
In order to produce top-notch music teachers, our program provides you with comprehensive instruction in musicianship and pedagogy. You will learn contemporary methodology from professors skilled in preparing you to meet the challenges of teaching in diverse environments.

As a music education major, you will have the opportunity to choose one of four specialty areas (band, choral, classroom or orchestra) and receive extensive training for that concentration. Participating in field experiences in a variety of educational settings, beginning your first year, allows you to hone your teaching skills and become comfortable in the classroom. On a weekly basis, you can also teach at a local elementary school instrumental music program and for the UD New Horizons Bands for senior adults.

Our low student-to-faculty ratio provides personal advising and attention. You'll get to know your professors on a personal basis as well as receive private lessons from experts in their field. Many of our professors are also professional performers and serve as role models and sources of current musical information.

Whether you like to sing, play or conduct, there are plenty of opportunities to perform. We offer over a dozen ensembles, including Choral Union, Ebony Heritage Singers, Flyer Pep Band, Pride of Dayton Marching Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, University Chorale, University Concert Band, University Orchestra, and jazz ensembles and combos, as well as vocal and instrumental chamber ensembles. Additional musical opportunities exist through Hands in Harmony (a sign language group), the Opera Workshop, an annual musical stage production and guest artist master classes.

The music department is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, and the music education degree is licensed by the state of Ohio.
