At the center of campus.
Our spiritual home.
Our house to gather and worship.
In 2011, the University of Dayton celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, founder of the Marianists. As we celebrate a man of great faith and vision, we want to make a bold statement in his honor. During this time, we will attract $12 million in private support to renovate and expand the Immaculate Conception Chapel in the heart of campus.

Preserve our Catholic, Marianist history.
Expand and update.
Build to meet our new needs.
Consecrated and dedicated in 1869, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception has always been distinguished by its massive wooden front doors and towering dome. Through the years, it has undergone renovations to improve functionality and aesthetics.
In 1899, electric lighting was introduced. In 1929, a redecoration and alteration including new pews, chandeliers and a heating and ventilation system. In the latte 1940's, renovations included interior paint; cleaning and retouching of the ceiling; a bronze tabernacle; and new Marian artwork. In 1970, it was renovated based on the liturgical recommendations of Vatican II.
The expansion and renovation will lengthen the chapel and add to the east end a reservation chapel for the tabernacle. The building will expand both north and south to add seating to the worship space and a room for a gathering space and baptismal font near the west entrance.

Sensitive to original design.
A Bold Statement About Our Mission.
As the University of Dayton has transformed into one of the nation's top Catholic universities, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception has undergone many transformations in its history. The style of the addition will be sensitive to the original architecture. Original pieces of religious art will be reused, when possible, and new finishes and materials will recall the chapel's history: wooden pews, kneelers, rich colors and decorative window detail.
The $12 million renovation and expansion will provide:
• Gracious space for the rituals of Sunday Mass and the entire Church year — the spiritual rituals of Holy Week and the Triduum; the particular needs of baptisms, weddings, funerals and religious vows of Marianists; adequate room for the Gospel and communion processions
• An enhanced relationship of the congregation to the sanctuary space with seating that surrounds the altar in a gentle embrace and special seating for the choir as part of the congregation
• A purposeful progression into the worship space mirroring the Marianist path to Jesus Christ — through the Mother to the Son
• A gathering space that promotes fellowship and community without diminishing the reverent peacefulness of the sanctuary
• A baptismal font
• Intimate spaces for private reflection and prayer
• A reconciliation room
• Increased seating capacity
• Barrier-free accessibility to the entire chapel
