Welcome from Dean Paul H. Benson

Paul H. BensonAugust 26, 2012

Dear faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences,

I hope that the 2012-13 academic year has gotten off to a strong start for you, your students, and your offices.  By every indication, we have recruited an excellent incoming class of first-year students.  I have been impressed with their focus and the seriousness of their questions during the opening events of the year.

I know that the large size of the incoming class will challenge many of our offices and so am grateful to you for the extra efforts that you will make to assist our new students with their transition to UD’s campus and to our academic expectations.

As those who were on campus over the summer know, the University underwent a great deal of renovation and construction activity this summer.  The latest round of Science Center renovations disrupted a good deal of work in the sciences division.  The efforts that faculty and staff in the Science Center made to cooperate with Facilities, with contractors, and with our office were greatly appreciated.  I will host a reception later this term to thank everyone in the Science Center for their patience and goodwill.

The dean’s office continues to work hard to communicate regularly with faculty and staff, both for the purpose of understanding your concerns and responding to your questions, as well as to share information efficiently that comes to us from the offices of the President, the Provost, or the vice presidents.  Please look for announcements soon about the College staff meetings and the divisional faculty forums that I will convene this semester.

Thank you, in advance, for the good work that you will do this year to advance the College’s academic mission in research and teaching, to support the development of our students’ minds and hearts, and to continue to improve the quality of UD’s academic community.  Each of you plays an important part in shaping the value and impact of our work together.
