Small Smiles Externship
Because fewer than 25% of dentists nationwide accept Medicaid, Small Smiles Dental Centers were created to ensure access to quality, professional dental care for low-income, underserved families. These centers provide dental care primarily for children and have recently begun to accept adult patients as well. They provide a wide range of dental services including routine cleanings and filling cavities. They also provide free dental screenings, nutrition education, and dental health education along with outreach to the local community.
The Premedical Programs Office has arranged an externship opportunity for our students at the Dayton office of Small Smiles, located at 4257 W. 3rd St, Dayton, OH 45417.
A background check and a drug screen are required before being permitted to take the required training. See document "Completing Documentation for Small Smiles Externship" above. The training is a series of videos about topics such as HIPAA, CPR, and office procedures.
After completing the training, each extern will choose a specific block of time to volunteer each week. While there, externs will shadow dentists, observe office procedures, sterilize equipment, escort patients, stock supplies, and assist with office work.
This is a great opportunity for any student considering dentistry as a career. You will see dentists at work, develop patient interaction skills and learn how a dental office operates.
Students must commit to at least several hours one day a week for four to six weeks (or more).
