White Scripts and Black Supermen

University Libraries will screen WHITE SCRIPTS AND BLACK SUPERMEN: BLACK MASCULINITIES IN AMERICAN COMIC BOOKS, a documentary film by Jonathan Gayles, Ph.D.

Join us on Thursday, Sept. 12 in the Roesch Library 1st Floor Group FlexSpace. The film will be shown at 11:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. This event is free and open to all. Attendees are invited to bring their own lunch or dinner.

Through interviews with prominent artists, scholars and cultural critics along with images from the comic books themselves, this film examines the degree to which early Black superheroes generally adhered to common stereotypes about Black men. From the humorous, to the offensive, early Black superheroes are critically considered.
