First Day Jitters

Today was not only my first day of school, but it was my first day at a new school. Needless to say, I was just a tad nervous. This semester I am in Early Childhood Methods courses, which means these first two weeks I only attend my field placement, which is with first graders at Beverly Gardens elementary school.

At the end of last semester I was lucky enough to be able to meet with my mentor teacher and discuss a few things. But, it was still a little nerve-wracking being there on the first day. However after having a very long day (as in waking up at 6 and coming back at 3:30), I have to say that I loved it.

Most of the day I spent observing my class and getting to know the students. They are too cute! I spent lots of time tying shoelaces and tagging along for the bathroom breaks and water breaks. I also got to introduce myself and read an “About Me” book that I had created.

After school, my teacher and I talked and got to know each other a little bit better. She told me that she often likes to throw things at her student teachers, so that they don’t stress too much beforehand. But she says she will always ask before giving me a task. I actually like this concept because I do tend to stress a lot, so this way I will just always have to be on my toes and be flexible (which is what teaching is all about, isn’t it?)

I really like my mentor teacher and all of her ideas and I think that I will learn so much from this experience. It will be rough, but I look forward to each day.
