FTK!

11.20.2011Today I stood on my feet and danced for 12 hours as part of Dance Marathon. For those of you who don’t know, Dance Marathon is a student-run organization in which you dance for 12 hours straight in hopes of raising money and awareness about Dayton Children’s Hospital. This was my first year and I have to say it was absolutely amazing! Each hour there is a different theme for the dance, some examples are: Sports, Wedding, Disney, Decade, USA, Neon, and many more. For each of these hours, you dress up according to the theme, which is a lot of fun. They also bring in special performances such as the UD Irish Dance club, the dance team, On the Fly (the improv club), live music, and many others. These performances serve as nice little breaks between dancing and they are a lot of fun to watch. In addition, whenever a Miracle child enters the building, all of us (about 400) would make a large tunnel for them to run through, while screaming and clapping for them. After each child would run through the tunnel, they would tell us their story and thank us for raising money for them. This was my favorite part, because it showed how we are really helping the children, as well as how appreciate they are of UD’s support. I also enjoyed seeing how much fun the kids were having dancing and dressing up according to the theme. They were absolutely adorable and it really warms your heart. I can definitely say that hearing their stories and watching them dance made it a lot easier to be on your feet for that long. Also, the committee of Dance Marathon did a really great job of making sure that everyone was happy. They provide you with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. And it’s not average food. We had brands like Dairy Queen, Monster, and Domino’s cater, among others. One thing that was especially cool this year was that UD had received a sponsorship from Just Dance 3, so we all got to play it, which was a lot of fun! As the night went on, there were other contests like best costumes and even a lip synching competition. I had a great time and will definitely be participating in Dance Marathon for the rest of my college career. I strongly recommend that you all join...it’s only 15 dollars and the result of what you get out of the event is priceless. And it’s FTK, which means For The Kids!
