1200 worship aids02.24.2012Ash Wednesday has the biggest turnout for mass on campus, it seems. It's so crazy, and at the same time it's so great to see so many people show up for a mass that's not even mandatory to attend. UD makes it so easy to go, though, with masses at 8, 10, 12, 4, 6, 8, and 9 - basically, if you want to go, you can, which is really awesome, and a great beginning to Lent.
As a music minister, I was required to attend and play piano for one of the masses on campus. Because of my schedule, I signed up for the 8pm mass along with 3 other music ministers who would be singing. We met with each other this past Monday to plan what music we would use, and we decided we would meet at 7 to practice with each other before mass began at 8. When I was getting ready to leave Campus South though, I got a text from one of the girls who was singing with us which said, "The 6PM mass just started communion."
Uh oh. We needed to practice! And the books I needed with the music were in use already, so I didn't have access to them. I met with the singers in the music theater building and we went over what we could without much music. By the time we got to the chapel it was 7:30, and people were still exiting from mass. Apparently they had to open the doors and stand outside - it was THAT packed.
The 8pm mass probably had 400-500 people there, which was a ton, but not as much as some of the others. One of the music ministers calculated the number of worship aids(sheets to follow along) made for that day - about 1200. How crazy is that!? Again, what a great way to welcome Lent.
