The road less traveled

02.27.2011

I went on a retreat this weekend! It was really great. First semester I went on a retreat called New Beginnings- this semesterÂ’s retreat was called The Road Less Traveled. It was for freshmen only, and it was led by other freshmen, which was really cool. Many of my close friends were leaders, actually.

We left on Friday afternoon at 4:00 PM, and drove about an hour off campus to a place called Camp Kern. ItÂ’s a pretty big camping site with various lodges and paths and things. Just being there, away from campus, was great- sometimes I feel like I just need to get away from everything here for a little bit. The retreat had different aspects to it: sometimes we met in small groups and talked, sometimes we had free time where we could socialize with anyone, and sometimes we had alone time to reflect. The alone time especially was quite nice, since itÂ’s hard to find quiet here at school.

Friday night was a lot of fun. We were given free time during the night, so a few of us decided to take a walk around the campgrounds at night. We walked all the way to the end of the site, and we were stopped in the fact that it was SO quiet. IÂ’ve never heard so much quiet in one place- it was like you could almost feel it. So the five of us just sat there in the road and listened to nothing, not speaking to one another. It was really really awesome. Reality came back when we heard a car coming off in the distance, saw the headlights, and jumped up to run as we all laughed. It reminded me of a scene from a movie.

When we got back, there was a mini soccer ball that a few of us found and began to kick around. Suddenly, it turned into an intense game of 4 girls versus 3 guys (who actually knew what they were doing.) We set up goals out of chairs, and ended up playing until 1:30 in the morning. The next morning, we awoke to pancakes and listened to some of the leaders give talks, along with other various things. I didnÂ’t get back until fairly late on Saturday night, and ended up going to sleep because I was so exhausted. All in all though, retreat was great. Now itÂ’s time to get my midterms out of the way, and then go on break!!!
