Big Bang on Bastille Day07.16.2011Wednesday night was the big night for fireworks in Angers, because France's national holiday was Thursday. Emily, Catherine, and I got to the river early so we could get a good spot in the grass. We ended up sitting in a great spot and could see everything perfectly. I can't even begin to describe how awesome the display was...the fireworks (or, in French, the feu d'artifice) were accompanied by music, a lot of which was in English. That was kind of a weird thing to hear, but sort of comforting at the same time. My favorite string of songs began with a techo-ish song that kept saying "Barbara Streisand" at the end of the musical phrase. The next song was by the Beatles, followed by "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." I mean, it doesn't really get better than that. And not to mention that the fireworks themselves were spectacular. Check out the pics below to get a glimpse.
And even though basically the entire city was there, there were no problems leaving. Everyone was super calm and not in a rush to get anywhere. So different than in the States, it seems. Seeing the Bastille Day fireworks almost made up for not being home for July 4th...almost. Although, nothing can replace a good ol' American cook-out.
