Instructor: Barbara Heroy John
Location: Miriam Hall Room 109

This mini-course constitutes a unique opportunity to do “service-learning” in the Dayton Public Schools and possibly charter schools in the vicinity. The Junior Achievement Program has designed introductory economic education packages appropriate to elementary school classrooms. Typically, community volunteers present the material, but the demand exceeds the supply. To rectify that shortage, JA has turned to universities. College students from all majors have proven to be wonderful presenters, delivering the content, closely aligned with the Ohio competency requirements, with enthusiasm and grace. To be a JA tutor, no prior experience of economics is necessary. Any college student is qualified; the training is brief and the content easily mastered in two sessions. After training, each participant will be assigned to an area teacher to make arrangements to present the material in 5-6 two-hour increments (e.g. once weekly for five weeks). Not only do the DPS children gain vital content from these units, but presenters will gain skills, poise and an immense sense of satisfaction.
