New Horizons Band

The UD New Horizons Bands programs offer adults, 50 and over, the opportunity to begin a musical instrument, or a ‘re-entry’ point for those who have been away from active music making for many years. Many adults will enjoy the social aspects of group activities such as NHB. They will meet new friends, have events to look forward to, and become an important part of a group. Music provides an opportunity to experience profound and serious thought or joyful moments. It not only makes connections to the past, present and future, but is also associates one to other individuals and other cultures.

NHB is a unique program as it emphasizes the learning (or re-learning) of active music making. While the typical community band tends to cater to those who are accomplished on their instruments, NHB accommodates those who want to try something new, or begin polishing those skills that might be a bit rusty.  We believe that it’s never too late to start!  Our teaching philosophy is based on playing with a good tone, playing by ear before reading music, and developing a solid sense of rhythmic feeling.  Teachers instruct in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

When you belong to NHB, you not only belong to our University of Dayton program, but you are also a part of an international organization. There are over 170 New Horizon Music programs throughout the United States, Canada, and beyond. Each year there are opportunities to attend New Horizons Band Camps at various locations throughout the US. Visit the national website using the link below.

The Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education, in conjunction with the University of Dayton's Department of Music, offers two NHB Concert Bands, one at the beginner level (Blue Band) and the other at the intermediate/advanced level (Red Band). Participants can make the decision as to which one to enter, and can switch at any time. We also offer a Jazz Band for those who play at the intermediate level or better. Instruments taught include flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, and percussion. Lessons (optional, but encouraged) are taught in like-instrument groupings or privately, once a week for 30 minutes.
