The Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education greatly values the time and expertise so generously given by our seminar moderators. Read about our Winter 2011 moderators below.


Arlene Adcock has a degree in Spanish from Ohio University and has taught Spanish in high school. She lived in Spain for two years and has taken many seminars in Spanish during her career. She is now retired but continues to study Spanish because she enjoys it so much. She loves being able to share the language with others who are interested in the language and culture.

Dr. Amy Anderson is the Director of the UD Center for International Programs.

Mary Anne Angel, Ph.D., has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in communication and a doctorate in educational leadership. She has 28 years of experience as a communications faculty member in higher education, including 20 years at UD. Her research and teaching interests include servant leadership, multiracial feminism and cross-cultural communication with an emphasis on Native American topics and initiatives. She is the co-founder and Vice President of Two Trees Inc. – a nonprofit that focuses on building long- term relationships and collaboration between Native peoples and non-Native communities. She also co-produced Tatanka Winjnan, a documentary on the conditions for youth on the Standing Rock Reservation as framed by the life and death of 17-year-old Lakota Rose Madison.

Ann Anzalone is a teacher who incorporates what she teaches in her presentations, which focus on effective learning and teaching based on current brain-based research. Prior to being an in-service presenter, Ann taught middle school, junior high and high school students, was an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America and was listed in the Who’s Who in American Education. Currently, Ann teaches graduate seminars in the Division of Professional Practice at Wright State University and McGregor School, Antioch University, Summer Program.

John Bierman grew up loving the great Western Movies of his childhood. He has previously presented Quebec Cinema I-IV, Great Western Movies and co-presented a seminar on French director Jean-Luc Godard.

Tom Bookwalter has been a student of Custer and the Little Big Horn for over 50 years. He is the author of several pamphlets and articles and has lectured on the subject throughout the country. Employed as a lawyer in private practice, he has a BA from the University of Dayton and JD from the University of Cincinnati.

Jason Bush is a level one Sommelier.  He has been employed at Arrow Wine and Spirits for the last six years where he is lead wine buyer and manager.  He works on a daily basis with customers as well as tastes wines and decides whether to carry them.  He has a background in retail management.

Mark Cannon is a retired PhD scientist with a lifelong interest in history. He has moderated seminars on WWI, WWII and Napoleon, among others. He recently presented a seminar called France, Britain and the Conquest of North America.

Rick Chamberlain is a 1980 UD graduate. He was a four-year letterman and captain on the football team who is now a member of the UD Hall of Fame. He has spent 29 years as a UD Football Assistant Coach/Defensive Coordinator and three years as head coach.

John Clough has been a practicing lawyer for 15 years in estate planning and probate.

Father Chris Conlon, SM, has been involved in photography for 25 years and has visited more than a dozen National Parks. He has taught in high schools for 30 years and at UD for 22 years. He was Director of Campus Ministry from 1989 to 1998.

Paul Cooper is a retired Air Force pilot with over 34 years of airlift experience. He has flown combat airlift missions to Vietnam and commanded bases in Desert Storm and Bosnia. He conducts tours at the National Museum of the Air Force in addition to his duties on the UDLLI Board of Governors.  He has a Master’s degree in Aviation History.

Judge Robert L. Deddens educated in Cincinnati at the University of Cincinnati’s colleges of engineering and law. Admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1967 and has practiced law here for 40 years, as a patent lawyer (three years), and as a general practitioner. Judge Robert Deddens has been in solo practice since 1987, was elected to Oakwood Municipal Bench in 1989 and was elected to a fourth, six- year term in 2007.  Oakwood’s Judgeship is a part-time position.

Susan Dilhoff has lived in Dayton, Ohio her entire life and has been working in the travel industry for 49 years. She attended St. Mary School and Julienne High School. She has traveled extensively throughout Ohio and the United States as well as on many trips abroad. She has learned a lot about different areas through serving her clients on their travels.

Don Donoher was the UD basketball coach from the 1964-65 season to the 1988-89 season.

Yvonne Dunphe is a graduate of Purdue University and has had a diverse professional career. She earned her designation as Master Gardener in 2001 from the Ohio State University and began with Five Rivers MetroParks that same year, starting as a volunteer at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark. By the end of 2001, she was employed as a part-time Horticulture technician at Cox Arboretum MetroPark, where she is now in her 10th year and serving as adult education supervisor. She is also a horticulture consultant for Washington Township.  Yvonne has also taught behavior and training work with Pet Behavior and Training Services for 19 years.

Peg Farmer is a Certified Zentangle Teacher. She was a frustrated art enthusiast who finally found her niche through Zentangle and is eager to share it. She has been involved with UDLLI as a student and liaison since 2004. Her work experience was in social service, public and private administration.

Judge Patrick Foley is a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Board of Governors and is also a graduate of the Notre Dame College of Commerce and College of Law and retired from the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas.

Anthony Franchina graduated from UD in 1984 and has served as a teacher, administrator, interpreter, consultant, manager and missionary in a diverse array of schools, universities, corporations and other organizations throughout North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.  Recently he has been a resident community member of The Hermitage in Michigan where he developed contemplative retreats for the personal transformation of participants based on Dante’s Divine Comedy.  Franchina earned an M.A. in Italian Language and Literature as well as an M.A. in Educational Policy and Leadership from Ohio State University.

Bro. Don Geiger retired from the UD Department of Biology. He is associated with the Marianist Environmental Education Center, Greene County Parks, the Beavercreek Wetlands Association and other organizations engaged in ecosystem restoration projects.

Neil Gittleman spent more than 15 seasons as Music Director of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. He is the conductor for the production of Bernstein’s MASS to be performed by the DPO and Wright State University in May 2011. He played in the violin section of the Yale Symphony for the European premiere of Bernstein’s MASS in June 1973.

Bruce “Jet” Green has spent 27 years in the aviation field as an air traffic controller and is a member of the FAA’s Safety Team. Jet is also a highly sought after speaker on topics ranging from safety mishap prevention to the Life and Music of Elvis Presley. Jet hosts his own radio show and can be heard daily on WSWO FM 101.1 giving his “Safety Minute Update” tip on home and health accident prevention.

Ida Gressis has taught classical mythology, Latin and Italian in the UD Department of International Languages, Literatures and Cultures since 1986. She has traveled widely to Greece, Italy, France, Germany and Ireland (just to name a few).

Steve Harman learned about computers over his career in marketing and advertising in which “sink or swim” was the order of the day. He began using the personal computer in the early 1980s and continued to increase his reliance on and comfort with these technologies as they evolved. Steve retired in 2010 and continues to use laptops, smart phones and social networking, both for enjoyment and for the volunteer organizations in which he serves.

Nancy Hatton is an artist and editor of UDLLI’s newsletter, The Lifelong Learner. She has moderated art and Dayton topic seminars for UDLLI. She studied art at Sinclair, Wright State and the University of Dayton.  Nancy’s works are currently represented by Gallery 510 Fine Art in the Oregon Arts District.

Alex Heckman is the Director of Education and Museum Operations for Dayton History, Montgomery County’s official historical organization. He has been involved in local history work for over 10 years.

Frank Henninger has spent decades looking for ways we can learn about and from cultures distinct from ours because of geography or time or both.

Tim Hrastar has over 40 years experience as a business development and communications consultant, with a B.A. and M.A. in Communications from the University of Dayton and has had his own business since 1976. He helps lawyers and other business professionals make money by improving their business development and communications with clients and colleagues through personal coaching, consulting, facilitation of strategic planning meetings and delivery of professional education workshops. He has done this for thousands of professionals in such fields as law, banking, finance, engineering and manufacturing and service industries. He has been involved with the UDLLI since 2005.

Jim Hughes (Harvard 1961) and Betsy Hughes (Vassar 1962) are both avid readers and writers. Together they have moderated over 10 UDLLI seminars involving literature and creative writing.

Dr. Margaret Karns is Professor Emerita of Political Science and founding director of the UD Center for International Programs.


R. Alan Kimbrough is a Professor of English at the University of Dayton, where he has taught for 42 years.  He has worked extensively in the study of operas as literature, delivering pre-performance lectures on many different operas and teaching (at UD, in Vienna and in Sarasota, Florida) in seminars and institutes for school teachers, particularly on the operas of Mozart.

Joseph Kunkel is a professor emeritus at UD. He was trained in western philosophy and has studied eastern views. He has taught seminars in human nature, ethics, pragmatism, war and peace.

Dennis Langer has been a General Division Judge with the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court since 1995.  He received his B.A. from John Carroll University in 1973 and his J.D. from the Boston University School of Law in 1976. In 1994, he was named Ohio’s “Outstanding Assistant Prosecuting Attorney” by the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association. He has had a lifelong admiration of Abraham Lincoln, has read extensively about him and has visited numerous Lincoln historical sites.

David E. Larson received his BA in English and History from Wittenberg University, his MPA in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina and his law degree from the Ohio State University College of Law. He has worked in a wide range of practice areas, but has focused on Bankruptcy Law and Immigration/Naturalization law. He has assisted many documented and undocumented residents in the Miami Valley area with Immigration and Naturalization services.

Jim Levinson spent over 26 years prosecuting all types of felonies in Montgomery County, Ohio.  For the last 14 years before his retirement, he was Chief of the County Prosecutor’s Criminal Division, supervising about three dozen lawyers in the prosecution of more than 5,000 felony cases each year.

William MacMillan was an attorney in Private Law Practice for 23 years while also a County Court Judge for 12 years, then Judge of Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas for 18 years.  He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame College of Commerce and College of Law.

Pat Madden is a long time member of the UDLLI, past president and advisor.

Natalie Malay-Peppel has a bachelor of science in education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  She is a physical mind certified and STOTT TM trained Pilates instructor, certified Gyrotonic® instructor and owner of Trilogy Movement Studio.

Ileana Marin is a Senior Program Associate from the Charles F. Kettering Foundation.

Herbert Woodward Martin is professor emeritus of English. He taught English, African-American literature and creative writing (poetry) for more than three decades. He has given readings of Dunbar’s works around the world.

Dr. Judith Martin, SSJ, former Director of the Women’s Studies Program, has been teaching world religions at UD for 30 years. She has travelled widely in the Middle East, Pakistan and India, where she has met with Muslim educators, politicians and religious leaders. Sr. Judith is especially interested in the Religion and Politics in the Middle East and has published a number of articles in this area.

Terry Martin is retired from the beverage industry. He is a history buff who deals in used books and is a book collector.

Patricia Meyer is the Assistant Director of the Area Agency on Aging, PSA 2, a nonprofit agency that administers government programs for persons age 60 and older in nine county areas in West Central Ohio.  She has 25 years of experience in this field.  She has a B.A. in History from UD.

Richard Munn has been a personal trainer for six years. He has organized and implemented many athletic events such as golf outings and 5K races. He has worked at the NCR Country Club Fitness Facility, Personally Fit, LA Fitness and the downtown YMCA. He currently works at the Kettering Fitness and Wellness Center as an Exercise Specialist. He has given many presentations on the state and local level on a variety of fitness topics. He has been a volunteer coach, site manager for Chaminade Julienne athletic events and currently volunteers at CJ’s new Student Conditioning Center.

Members of the Oakwood School District Technology Support team, both staff and high school students, will provide small group and individual assistance.  The technology support team has logged thousands of hours assisting low-tech computer users with answers to hundreds of questions. Let them help you too!

Sherry Pesut was a historical tour guide from 2006-2009. In January 2009, she became the volunteer coordinator for Woodland Building Volunteer Program. She does speaking engagements for clubs and organizations. Sherry is developing new tours while also writing a book on the history of Woodland.

Jim Place has coached high school football in the Dayton area for 41 years. He has also been a teacher, counselor, AD and administrator. His most recent position was Director of Character Education for the Hamilton City Schools. In 2010, the Hamilton City Schools were named the Ohio Character School of the Year.

Donald Quigley retired in 2004 after 35 years in the Information Technology field.  He worked for Hitachi, General Electric and IBM in various sales and consulting management positions. He is now Adjunct Faculty member of the MIS department at UD.  Recently he self-published a successful memoir titled “Letters from Otto.” He is currently finishing a second memoir style novel called “Santa’s Magic” and a family cookbook and a new Photobook entitled “Travels with Patti.”  Don graduated from UD with a BA in Psychology and an MBA. He is a co-founder of a local writers group and blog called the Wannabes.

Bob Reece originally joined the faculty of Wright State in the religion department, but he spent most of his career teaching medical ethics and chairing a department in Wright State’s School of Medicine.

Ben Rice is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Dayton.

Alzada Roberts is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She taught American history for 34 years and retired in 2001. She moved to Dayton after Hurricane Katrina and became an active member of the UDLLI in 2006. She also volunteers at the Dayton History Archives. She recently taught a seminar on America and the Great War for UDLLI.

Dr. William Roberts is professor of theology at the University of Dayton and author/editor of 15 books. Over the past several years he has been the moderator of numerous UDLLI seminars.

Enrique Romaguera has been at UD since 1969. He has taught phonetics in French, Spanish and Russian, as well as Haitian Kreyol. He has also taught Dramatic Kinesics in a Foreign Language in conjunction with directing stage performances in the same languages, so that gestures as well as pronunciation were adequate to the specific culture (over 90 play titles). He has also taken numerous groups of students to France during the summers to study French within the culture.

Jim Romer is a retired surgeon with a penchant for fly fishing. Cap’n Billy Focke is a retired salesman/entrepreneur who taught Jim how to fly fish. James Corbin is a retired albeit slightly twisted research chemist, learned rod builder and lake fisherman. Alan Donaldson is the manager of Spring Run Trout Club. Mike Ross is a retired cowboy, horse breeder and contractor who lives and breathes fly fishing and fly tying. Jay Schwieterman is a stockholder.

Gary Ruff has over 5000 45 RPM records from the early 1950s to the 1980s. Some are valued at over 100 dollars. He has seen many of the artists in person including Chuck Berry, Bill Haley (picture taken with him in 1958), Bo Diddley, James Brown and many more. His high school teaching experience has given him the confidence to present this seminar with much interest.

Andrew Sawyer is the Site Manager and Site Anthropologist at SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park.  He is also an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work at UD.

Allan Spetter is a retired professor of history at Wright State.

J. Robert Suriano is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Bob Taft, governor of Ohio 1999-2007 and distinguished research associate, University of Dayton, has a master’s degree in public affairs from Princeton University and a juris doctorate from the University of Cincinnati.  As governor, he initiated the Ohio Reads Program, a new system of academic standards and assessment; the Ohio Core curriculum, with a focus on math and science; and the EdChoice program for students trapped in failing schools.

Bob Thum, now retired, taught English and conducted educational workshops for 30 years in the Mad River School District.  He has moderated a variety of seminars for the UDLLI.

Sharon Otto Trekell has a doctorate in psychology and a Master of Science degree in marriage and family counseling. She is also a certified Health and Wellness coach and certified Tai Chi and Qigong instructor.

William Trollinger has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Wisconsin and is an Associate Professor of History and Religious Studies Departments at UD. Susan Trollinger has Ph.D.in Rhetoric from the University of Pittsburgh and is an Associate Professor of English at UD.

Dennis Turner has served as Assistant Dean, Acting Dean, Director of the Law Clinic, Director of the Legal Profession Program, Chair of the Admissions Committee and as Advisor for both the Mock Trial teams and the Moot Court Board at the UD School of Law. He won the UD Award for Teaching in 1990 and has also been chosen as Professor of the Year twice by School of Law students. He is the only remaining full-time faculty member from 1974 when the School of Law reopened. He calls teaching at UD “rewarding.”  “UD is a great institution,” he said. “Here I am 30 years later and still having a great time.”

Harriet Uphoff has been an educator for 50 years, with 40 years in secondary school and 10 years as adjunct faculty in English and Education in a variety of institutions. She has a background in history, political science, economics and English. She has taught five seminars on a variety of topics due to her wide range of interests.

Dr. James Uphoff is now in his 52nd year as an educator and his 44th year with Wright State University. He is also Vice President for Programs for the LWV-Great Dayton Area. In 2001 he was President of the Ohio School Board Association.

Rodney Veal is a former dancer with the Gem City Ballet, and is currently chairman of the board for the Involvement Advocacy/Blue Sky Project.  Rodney earned his MFA in choreography from Ohio State University and is an adjunct faculty member at Sinclair Community College and Stivers School for the Arts.  He was a Blue Sky artist during the 2009 summer project and a 2004 and 2010 recipient of the MCACD Fellowship.

Raymond Two Crows Wallen is a singer, songwriter, musician and arts educator. He is a member of the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Native consultant for Two Trees, Inc., Executive Board Member of the Miami Valley Council for Native Americans and member of the National Audubon Society, among other things.  His album From the Outside Indian was a Native American Music Award nominee for “Best Folk/Country Recording” in 2004.

Judith Wehn is the Chief of the Education Division of the National Museum of the USAF, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. She is responsible for developing and managing ongoing education programs for pre-K students through adults, both formal and informal learning experiences. She is a frequent presenter and workshop leader at national conferences. She received both a B.S. in Education and an M.S. from the University of Dayton.

Felix Weil was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1927 and lived with his family until August 1939 when he was placed in a “kindertransport” bound for England, never to see his family again. He came to the United States in 1945. In 1946 he was drafted in the US Army and sent back to Germany for occupation duty. Felix graduated from Kent State University in 1950 and has lived in Dayton ever since. His career was in commercial art business. He lectures both in the United States and Germany about the Holocaust.

Brian Weiss has lived in Europe and Asia for about 10 years each. He spent his working life in business (sales and operations management). His degrees are in business and history and he is a part-time instructor in History and Humanities at Sinclair Community College.
