Elections in the State of Ohio

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted will discuss the topic of elections in the state of Ohio and the role of his office. Topic points will include the administration of free and fair elections, services offered by the office of Ohio’s Secretary of State that supports Ohio businesses, how to become more involved in the election process and why Ohio matters in 2012 and beyond.

As Ohio’s 53rd Secretary of State, Jon Husted brings a strong record of leadership to the office including serving as the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives and later as a State Senator. Today Secretary Husted works to improve the overall administration of elections, and to ensure a fair,transparent and efficient process in which all Ohio voters can be confident. Husted attended theUniversity of Dayton, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He received All-American Defensive Back honors as a member of the University of Dayton 1989 Division III National Championship football team.

Healthcare, the Supreme Court and the 2012 Election

The political consequences of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Supreme Court’s review of it, and the 2012 presidential election will be explored.

Jason Pierce chairs the Political Science Department at University of Dayton.

The Rhetorical Campaign

The presentation looks at the rhetoric used in the presidential campaign, the use of different media and the consequences for governing.

Dan Birdsong is a lecturer at the University of Dayton. He teaches courses on American politics, the Presidency, campaigns and elections, the media, and public opinion. He is currently researching how people consume news in an era of multiple sources and new media. Dan received his doctorate from the University of Cincinnati.

Energy “Hot Buttons”Experts will address the hot button topics that are on people’s mind regarding energy — what is happening in Ohio and outside Ohio in energy efficiency, solar, wind, biomass and alternate vehicles  and other sustainability issues with a special emphasis on the current shale play and the opportunities for Ohio.
