Profile

Donna Hess was a paralegal for 15 years before coming to UD. She joined the Department of Geology in 1998, as an administrative assistant. She is a member of the Professional Office Personnel (POP) on campus, and was co-chair of the Human Resources Committee for 2000-2001. She works hard to get to know each of the majors in the department and also to help the majors get to know each other. She e-mails the students frequently about job opportunities within the department, picnics, get togethers. She has also developed a quickplace that the majors can go to that has each of their pictures, names and some personal information on it so they can get to know each other, especially first year and transfer students.

The Staff Perspective

I love working in the geology department at UD--they are a great group of faculty members. I have the opportunity to interact with the students a great deal and I enjoy helping them and watching them grow and graduate. What is truly special is when the students stay in touch even after graduation. It has become a tradition of sorts for the students to send postcards of their travels; I have a large collection displayed on the front of my desk.

The sharing of information through POP is a huge benefit in helping to accomplish my job effectively and efficiently, not to mention the ability to build relationships throughout campus. I highly recommend being a member of the Professional Office Personnel (POP) association at UD. This group does so much to promote secretarial/clerical personnel on campus. I also appreciate the educational opportunities that the University affords me through various certifications and courses that I have taken and wish to pursue.
