Profile
Dr. Matthew Levering is a professor of religious studies. He came to the University in 2009. His dissertation director was Stephen F. Brown.
The Faculty Perspective
I am interested in how to receive and pass on the faith and sacramental/moral life that characterize believers on the way to eternal life with the triune God through the mediation of Jesus Christ. The relationship of theology, philosophy, and biblical exegesis interests me, particularly as this shapes the doctrinal articulation of the Fathers as received by the high medieval theologians and by the later theological tradition. I frequently engage Jewish philosophy and theology. With Reinhard Hütter, I am co-editor of the quarterly journal Nova et Vetera (English edition). Since 2007 I have served as Chair of the Board of the Academy of Catholic Theology. With Hans Boersma, I am co-director of the Center for Catholic-Evangelical Dialogue. I currently co-edit book series for the University of Notre Dame Press, Catholic University of America Press, Sapientia Press, and Brazos Press.
