Faculty Perspective
My dream goal is to see one of my sculptures, paintings, or prints on permanent display at the Dayton Art Institute, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., the National Gallery, or at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (several places that have inspired me). I do not want my artwork in one or even several of these museums just for posterity’s sake to view, but rather to help current and future generations to see the world around them in new ways and to think about the universal and eternal impact that they can have on it as well. I am a firm believer that each of us can make a positive impact on the world if we each take the chance to explore, learn, and grow as a community.
I am an educator because I want to foster, mentor, and equip students with the tools needed to not only strive for their own success, but for the success of others as well. Teaching is not a one-way street, but rather it is an airfield where ideas can take off and carry all individuals involved to new heights of understanding. Likewise, I do not wish to merely teach art to students, but to instead teach students through art and for students to teach me through their art as well. Art is language—a visual communication that is universal and is spoken best when shared with others. It has formed and defined societies and even transformed our cultural history as a people. As both an artist and art educator, I work in numerous artistic mediums because I want to learn as many dialects of the language as possible. Although this is my first year teaching at the University, it is my hopes that I will be speaking the language of art at the University of Dayton and in the Dayton community for a long, long time.

Artist's Statement
I create sculpture that lives. Empowered by the unseen and omnipresent forces of nature (such as gravity, wind, air, and space), my sculpture, just like life itself, is always changing and moving in new directions. In fact, my kinetic art is the manifestation of being moved on many levels.
The process of creating kinetic sculptures is a personal and spiritual experience for me. In the same way that the wind moves my sculptures I believe that we too are moved and affected by elements that we cannot see. It is my intention to reveal the unseen world that exists both around and within us and to call attention to the hidden connections between nature and spirit. Wind, like faith, can only be best seen when it is in action.
My artwork is created from repurposed materials. These materials originally began as common industrial hardware, but I saw their true potential as a work of art and gave them a purpose beyond the mundane. The act of repurposing evokes a spiritual significance to me because I believe we each also have been designed with a purpose beyond our own understanding. As I create and assemble the parts to form one of my sculptures, I am reminded of a people utilizing their individual abilities to work together and become something more beautiful than any one of them could have been individually.
