Francis Schanberger has been photographing since fourth grade when he presented a homemade pinhole camera as his science project. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts from the Ohio State University in 2002, Francis’ photography has been characterized by an interest in historical processes, photographic installation and performance. He was awarded an OAC Individual Artist Fellowship in 2002, 2009 and 2013 as well as a Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District fellowship in 2008. In addition to exhibitions in Ohio, his work has been exhibited in Houston, New York, Brussels, Belgium and Kyoto, Japan. In 2013, he was one of three Americans invited to exhibit platinum prints on a newly developed paper, Tosahakkanshi at the Paper Museum near Kochi, Japan.

Faculty perspective

"Having worn many hats in my life, I have an interest in showing students how they can combine various facets of their experiences into artistic output. During my undergraduate years, my interest in the sciences led me to work within that field. Many years later, exposure to that environment has an ever-increasing impact on my current studio practice. I want to help students realize that their own background is the substance of their unique voice they bring to their art making."
