Profile

Dennis Lieberman, an experienced and well respected attorney, practices law in the areas of criminal defense and civil litigation. He has tried a substantial amount of cases in both state and federal courts.

Mr. Lieberman's law career began in 1978 after graduating Cum Laude from the University of Dayton School of Law. Hired by a large firm, Smith and Schnacke, he served as an associate for several years in the complex litigation team. He honed his skills in trial practice while working on antitrust and securities litigation.

Mr. Lieberman then left Smith and Schnacke to form his own firm with law school colleagues. In 1984, that firm merged with another and became Flanagan, Lieberman, Hoffman & Swaim. He has been a partner in Flanagan, Lieberman, Hoffman & Swaim for over three decades helping to build its reputation as one of the best legal firms in the State of Ohio. Mr. Lieberman continued his work in trial practice trying some of the most complicated cases in both the criminal and civil settings. His passion for helping those who are in need, culminated with extensive work in death penalty cases. Mr. Lieberman has represented clients in over 28 death penalty cases in various counties in the State of Ohio.

Not only has Mr. Lieberman represented defendants in death penalty cases, but he has also continued his representation of those who have been wronged, in civil courts. Some of his most well known cases include his firm's representation of the Ohio Teachers and Public Employee Retirement Funds in a class action lawsuit against Bank of America which resulted in a large settlement for the Retirement Fund.

Due to Mr. Lieberman's unique experience in both civil and criminal litigation, he has tried some of the most notorious and complex white collar criminal cases.

Outside of the courthouse, he is just as active in his community. During the 2012 election, he campaigned tirelessly to keep early voting in Ohio to make sure every vote is counted. In addition to his work on the Board of Elections, Mr. Lieberman was also Montgomery County Democratic Party Chair for 13 years and a candidate for the Ohio Democratic Party Chair.

Mr. Lieberman has volunteered to assist high school mock trial teams and has served on a number of local charitable boards. He currently serves as Trustee for his undergraduate school, Miami of Ohio and is a member of the Clayton City Council.

He has been recognized for his work in the legal community. He has received the distinguished Miami Alumni award from the University of Dayton School of law. He has been recognized as one of the best lawyers in America for over 25 years. The Dayton Business Journal has also recognized him as Best in the Bar. Mr. Lieberman's work with the Democratic Party earned him a lifetime achievement award from the Montgomery County Democratic Party and County Chair of the Year from the Ohio Democratic Party. Recognizing his efforts, the Association of Black Elected Officials also presented him with the Presidential Award.

Involvement in the community and work on death penalty cases has earned him recognition by the MLK Holiday Celebration Humanitarian Award and the Access to Justice Community Advocacy Award. He was also presented with the Gideon Award by the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court for his representation of indigent defendants. Just recently he received the National Conference for Community and Justice of the Greater Dayton Area Humanitarian Award for his work in the community.
