Licensure Programs
Master's Degree in Educational Leadership
Students may earn a master of science of degree in Educational Leadership (M.S.) by successfully completing 30 semester hours of required coursework. The curriculum covers topics such as the following:
- educational leadership
- supervision and professional development
- instructional leadership
- curriculum
- school law
- internship
- research
- community relations
- leadership in diverse communities
- school finance
The Educational Leadership program serves as a stepping-stone to obtaining a principal license or a curriculum, instruction and professional development (CIPD) license. The principal license may be earned by completing 12 additional semester hours and providing evidence of two years of teaching experience under a standard teaching certificate. A student who has earned a principal license may choose to pursue a superintendent license.
Master's Degree with a Catholic School Leadership Concentration
The University of Dayton also offers a summer program for Catholic school educators on the main campus and online that prepares individuals to work as effective Catholic school leaders and administrators, meet state licensure requirements and accommodate individual goals. These students earn a master's degree in Educational Leadership (M.S.) with a Catholic School Leadership Concentration.

Educational Specialist Degree
Students who have completed a master's program may also earn an educational specialist degree (Ed.S.). The Ed.S. program is designed to enhance individual capabilities for educational leadership. The program of study requires a minimum of 33 semester hours of graduate work beyond the master's degree. The University of Dayton partners with Wright State University to offer this program, and courses may be taken on both campuses.
CIPD Licensure
The Department of Educational Leadership offers a graduate-level licensure program in curriculum, instruction and professional development for students who have completed the master's degree in Educational Leadership or a comparable M.S. program. To earn CIPD licensure, candidates must do the following:
- Complete 15 hours of designated CIPD licensure coursework.
- Provide evidence of two years of successful teaching experience under a standard teaching credential.
- Obtain a passing score on the Praxis II state test.
Principal Licensure
The Department of Educational Leadership offers a graduate-level principal licensure program for students who have completed the master's degree in Educational Leadership or a comparable M.S. program. To earn principal licensure, candidates must do the following:
- Complete 12 hours of designated principal licensure coursework.
- Provide evidence of two years of successful teaching experience under a standard teaching credential.
- Obtain a passing score on the Praxis II state test.

TopSuperintendent Licensure
The Department of Educational Leadership offers a graduate-level superintendent licensure program in for students who have completed the master's degree in Educational Leadership or a comparable M.S. program and have obtained principal licensure. To earn superintendent licensure, candidates must do the following:
- Complete 15 hours of designated licensure coursework.
- Provide evidence of three years of successful administrative experience under a standard administrative credential.
