About the Department
Our practices reflect our Catholic Marianist traditions and principles. We aspire to educate for the formation of faith; to provide an integral and quality education; to educate in the family spirit; to educate for service, justice and peace; and to educate for adaptation and change.Students may earn a master of science of degree in educational leadership (MSEd) by successfully completing 30 semester hours of required. The MSEd curriculum covers topics such as educational leadership, supervision and professional development, instructional leadership, curriculum, school law, internship, research, community relations, leadership in diverse communities and school finance.
The MSEd program serves as a stepping-stone to obtain a principal license or curriculum, instruction and professional development (CIPD) license. The principal license may be earned by completing 12 additional semester hours and providing evidence of two years of teaching experience under a standard teaching certificate. A student who has earned a principal license may choose to pursue a superintendent license.
The University of Dayton offers a summer program for Catholic school educators on the main campus that prepares individuals to work as effective Catholic school leaders and administrators, meet state licensure requirements and accommodate individual goals.
An educational specialist degree (EdS) is available to students who have completed the MSEd. The EdS program is designed to enhance individual capabilities for educational leadership. The program of study requires a minimum of 33 semester hours of graduate work beyond the master's degree.
The Department of Educational Leadership offers courses on its main campus in Dayton and at various off-campus locations. In addition, all courses in the master's program and Principal Licensure Program are also offered online.
