Welcome to the School of Education & Allied Professions
The School of Education and Allied Professions merges critical reflection with fostering a learning community that focuses on educational theory and practice. Whether you're interested in K-12 or in higher education; whether you want to teach or work in school administration; whether you want to implement policy or develop new education strategies, we have a program that will help you become one of the leaders and the best in education.
The School addresses some of society's most critical needs. Through partnerships with the surrounding community, we're preparing future teachers and leaders to succeed in diverse settings.
Through research and innovative programs we're helping children improve their skills in reading, mathematics, and science.
Through distance-education initiatives we're helping teachers meet new challenges and grow professionally.
We Build. We Lead. We Cooperate.
We Call It Your Competitive Edge.
Transformation
The University of Dayton is made up of a community of scholars dedicated to transformative education.
We believe in "building community." It's a distinctly Catholic, Marianist educational philosophy that gives our graduates a competitive edge. They are prepared to build strong learning communities based on compassion, justice and collaboration. Our graduates develop critical minds and compassionate hearts ¿ honed by real-world experiences that are part of the curriculum, no matter what major they choose.
We offer an array of undergraduate and graduate programs, including a Ph.D. in educational leadership and a doctor of physical therapy. Master's degrees for teachers and administrators at public, private and Catholic schools are available online. Graduate degrees are also available in counseling and higher education as well as health and sport sciences.
Leadership
We rank in the upper echelon of Catholic higher education for faculty productivity, externally funded research and prominence within national initiatives. We are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
We also are part of an elite national network of colleges and universities dedicated to radically changing the way students are prepared to teach. The reform initiative, Teachers for a New Era (TNE) Learning Network, is supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Annenberg Foundation. It includes the premiere teacher preparation programs in the nation and focuses on disciplinary rigor, disciplinary studies and academically focused clinical experiences for pre-service teachers.
Our teacher education students already perform at the head of the class on Praxis II, an examination for teacher licensure in Ohio. The passage rates for University of Dayton teacher candidates significantly surpass the national passage rates.
Our students also excel in areas of allied health. Since 1995, our pre-physical therapy students have earned a 96 percent acceptance rate into graduate physical therapy programs, and dietetics students have achieved a 92 percent acceptance rate into post-baccalaureate dietetics internships. Our new, fully accredited doctor of physical therapy program has one of the highest percentages of board-certified faculty in Ohio.
Partnership
Here and across the region, partners in education, industry and government are collaborating to teach STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) across disciplines from early childhood through college. We're fulfilling a tremendous national need developing talent in fields at the root of the new economy.
We excel at urban and early childhood education. The Urban Teacher Academy prepares teachers to change the lives of urban schoolchildren. Students in the Lalanne Program teach for at least two years in a Catholic urban school, live together in a faith community and receive free tuition for master's degree courses taken during the summers. The Bombeck Family Learning Center serves as a model for its approach to early childhood education. Finally, the Dayton Early College Academy, a high school on campus operated by the University of Dayton, has received national attention for the way it's preparing high school students to earn a diploma and up to two years of college credit. DECA enjoys a 100 percent college acceptance rate. It's the only charter school in the country operated by a Catholic university and is the first early college in Ohio to enroll seventh graders.
At the University of Dayton, we're dedicated to transformative education.
