About the Department

At the University of Dayton, learning to be a teacher is about building learning communities through critical reflection. Because fields in the School of Education and Allied Professions require you to interact with others — and perhaps profoundly affect their lives — it's important for you to gain both knowledge and skills. Thus, whatever major you choose in the Department of Teacher Education, valuable real-world experiences are part of the curriculum.

The Department of Teacher Education prepares you to teach at the early, middle or secondary levels, and in specialized fields such as art, music, foreign language, Catholic religion and intervention specialist (special education). Our graduates work in a variety of public and private educational settings. Many go on to earn advanced degrees and pursue careers in educational leadership at the building or district level as principals and superintendents.

To be admitted to the School of Education and Allied Professions, you must meet University of Dayton entrance requirements and maintain a 2.5 GPA in all course work. Additionally, teacher education and physical education students must pass a basic skills test (Praxis I) in reading, writing and  mathematics during the first year of the program.

The University of Dayton is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and is one of only two Ohio institutions that is a member of the Teachers for New Era Learning Network, sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
