About the Department
The department is led by experienced, professional faculty members whose primary concern is providing you and every student the highest quality education. Our program is the only one in the nation in which the history and ethics of our profession are taught by real historians and philosophers instead of the “course in a box” approach. Our faculty of men and women is actively engaged in research projects with project sponsors such as the Ohio Department of Transportation, the United States Air Force, and numerous water and wastewater agencies. We offer impressively equipped, state-of-the-art laboratories, close interaction with faculty in and out of the classroom, opportunities to meet on a regular basis with practicing engineers in the Dayton community, and free advising and tutoring programs to assist and ensure your success.
You conduct real-world civil infrastructure design in our capstone design class by collaborating with practitioners, industry and government agencies and interdepartmental majors. Our design studio is the envy of civil engineering programs across the country. Both hardware and software are fully funded or heavily sponsored by numerous firms. In addition, our program is one of only a handful offering real-life surveying experience.
You can take advantage of cooperative education and get hands-on knowledge. Our department has more co-op positions than we have students, which gives you access to a variety of meaningful professional experiences. Service-learning opportunities also offer real-life experience in solving engineering problems for local and global communities in need.
We are proud of the consistent and unique success of our graduates who pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam on their first try. UD's success rate is significantly higher than state (95 percent) and national (85 percent) averages. Many graduates rank top in the state on the Professional Engineers exam.
The civil and environmental engineering and engineering mechanics program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
