The University of Dayton's Electro-Optics Graduate Program began in 1983 with challenging courses complemented by unparalleled research opportunities including a laser radar curriculum through our Ladar and Optical Communications Institute (LOCI), which is believed to be one of the first in the nation — we offer cutting-edge technology.
The School of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences collaborate to provide you the path to academic success. The U.S. Air Force and other regional businesses join our efforts with resources that include a network of world-renown researchers and state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment.
On campus, we offer 20 dedicated electro-optics laboratories. Off campus, we have access to the nation's largest Air Force research and development facilities as well as the labs at the University of Dayton Research Institute, which conducts over $70 million in annual sponsored research.

The University of Dayton Electro-Optics Graduate Program offers Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. As a student, you will collaborate with industry leaders and scholars who are experts in ladar system analysis and design, RF digital and free space optical communications, fiber optic sensing/communications, scanning and nonlinear optical image processing, quantum and nonlinear optics phenomena in heterogeneous systems, micro and nano-fabrication, infrared imaging, optical thin films and nanomaterials, semiconductor lasers, photodetectors, computational electromagnetics, nanophotonics, biophotonics, polarization sensing and engineering, and wavefront sensing and engineering.

Prof. Qiwen Zhan from Electro-Optics at the University of Dayton has been elected Fellow of SPIE for his "achievements in space variant polarization engineering." SPIE is the International Society for Optics and Photonics. Fellows are Members of distinction who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. They are honored for their technical achievement, for their service to the general optics community, and to SPIE in particular. Dr. Zhan's research interests include Plasmonics, Nonaphotonics, Physical Optics, Metamaterials, Polarization Optics and metrology. Dr. Zhan was recognized and received his Fellow Award at the SPIE Photonics West Conference at San Francisco in February.
