The University of Dayton's Electro-Optics Graduate Program began in 1983 with challenging courses complemented by unparalleled research opportunities including a laser radar curriculum through our Ladar and Optical Communications Institute (LOCI), which is believed to be one of the first in the nation — we offer cutting-edge technology.

The School of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences collaborate to provide you the path to academic success. The U.S. Air Force and other regional businesses join our efforts with resources that include a network of world-renown researchers and state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment. 

On campus, we offer 20 dedicated electro-optics laboratories. Off campus, we have access to the nation's largest Air Force research and development facilities as well as the labs at the University of Dayton Research Institute, which conducts over $70 million in annual sponsored research.

The University of Dayton Electro-Optics Graduate Program offers Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.   As a student, you will collaborate with industry leaders and scholars who are experts in ladar system analysis and design, RF digital and free space optical communications, fiber optic sensing/communications, scanning and nonlinear optical image processing, quantum and nonlinear optics phenomena in heterogeneous systems, micro and nano-fabrication, infrared imaging, optical thin films and nanomaterials, semiconductor lasers, photodetectors, computational electromagnetics, nanophotonics, biophotonics, polarization sensing and engineering, and wavefront sensing and engineering.

There are funds available through the AFRL/DAGSI Ohio Student-Faculty Research Fellowship Program which supports graduate science and engineering students and faculty who conduct research in areas targeted by the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

Electro-optic technology is changing the way we see our world by rapidly revising the way we use and interact with technology. Our program is one of the most advanced in the world. Consider these areas of study through our on-campus research:

Research opportunities for M.S. and Ph.D. candidates are available from individual faculty members, the University of Dayton Research Institute and the Air Force Research Laboratory. We have the full support of industry, the state of Ohio and the federal government in our mission to educate engineers and scientists for the optics industry. Our electro-optics courses continue to evolve to meet the needs of our optics community.

We are actively engaged in industry-leading research while remaining focused on the enhancement of educational practice and electro-optics engineering scholarship.
