The engineering management and management science programs welcome students who need advanced skills to accelerate their professional career or who want to master quantitative methods for better decision-making. You can earn a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Engineering Management or in Management Science (operations research). Also, you can perform research in related areas of production engineering, reliability, statistical analysis, experimental design, quality assurance including statistical process control (SPC) and Six-Sigma, computer simulation modeling, artificial intelligence and optimization.   We offer the following certificates — Design of Experiments, Human Factors, Six Sigma, or Systems Engineering.

ACCREDITATION

The UD Internet-based programs in engineering management science are accredited as distance learning programs by the North Central Association (NCA) and were cited by the NCA in 2005 for their “robust information technology” and “careful attention to students.”

Careers

ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT (M.S.)

If you have an engineering, math or science degree and are ready to transition to a leadership or management position, the M.S. in engineering management degree is for you. Enhance your technical skills while developing your management skills. You will study organizational behavior, systems engineering, engineering economy, computer simulation modeling, decision making and operations research, along with an elective program you can tailor to your interests.

MANAGEMENT SCIENCE (M.S.)

If you are technically oriented, enjoy problem solving and have some quantitative skills, the M.S. in management science degree may be for you. You do not need to be an engineer to study management science. Applicants should have at least three semesters of analytic geometry and calculus. A liberal elective program allows you to take courses in the School of Business Administration, the College of Arts and Sciences and even the School of Education and Allied Professions. You will study optimization, queuing analysis, forecasting, reliability, production engineering and many other topics.

Research

Graduate students complete a research effort toward the end of their program of study by which they demonstrate their ability to translate coursework learned into a significant real-world area of application.  Engineering management students will complete an engineering case study, and management science students will complete an operations research project. In the past, our graduates have completed the following:

• Optimized manufacturing, assembly and sequencing operations for a new facility
• Developed a model for selecting a supplier for gas turbine engines
• Improved production and beer packaging for the Miller Brewing Company
• Reduced corrosion of carbon steel yoke
• Improved production rates on the Delphi Chassis drum brake wheel cylinder assembly line
• Analyzed the waiting lines at the Snowshoe Ski Area in West Virginia
• Analyzed failure data for the avionics systems on the AC-130U gunship
• Optimized a water distribution system for the southern Montgomery County water treatment plant

Distance Learning

Earn a master's degree online via distance learning at one of the best universities in the nation.

The University of Dayton's online graduate degree programs in engineering are ranked among the best in the nation according to a January 2012 study released from U.S. News & World Report.  The Department of Engineering Management and Systems' online graduate programs ranked second in the nation in faculty credentials and training, 26th in student services and technology, and 35th in student engagement and accreditation.

The Department offers courses where classroom lessons are simultaneously broadcast over the Internet.  The classes are recorded and posted online, so students can access the information for review purposes or if they missed the original broadcast.  Masters' degrees in engineering management and management science can be earned totally via distance learning.

Although the online format of this degree offers flexibility, it still requires the same amount of work and time as an on-campus graduate program.  Depending on the learning and studying style, expect to spend nine to twelve hours per week on a three-credit hour course.  This will vary depending on your learning and studying style.

Your interactions with faculty depend on the specific course, but generally, your instructors have online or telephone office hours and are available by email or course discussion boards.

This online program allows you to earn your degree while maintaining your busy work and family schedules.

Learning online works for many people, but it is often a new experience and takes some getting used to.  To succeed as an online student, you have to be reasonably independent, motivated, and able to manage your time well.  You will not attend lectures in a classroom, so you assume more responsibility to read, communicate online, write papers, submit assignments according to deadlines, and balance your coursework with your personal and professional life.  You will have a much more active role in managing your online learning experience than you would in a classroom.

Discussions are critically important!  Since you don't see your instructor and fellow students, you should use the discussion board often.  Contributing your thoughts and experiences makes the course much more interesting and valuable for both you and your classmates, and most courses require you to interact frequently.  In online courses, there's no way to sit in the back of the room and avoid speaking — you must be present and active.
