Arrival Information, Summer 2013

Welcome to the University of Dayton! The following arrival information is for new international students beginning their studies in summer 2013 at the University of Dayton. The information below is divided into four sections:

Before You Arrive. These items must be resolved before you depart your country.

Orientation and Immigration Check-in. All international students must participate in an orientation and check-in with the ISSS office for immigration purposes. 

After You Arrive. These items must be resolved shortly after you arrive to the U.S.

Additional Resources. This information will be helpful to you in the first few days after you arrive. 

Before you arrive

1. CONFIRM YOUR ENROLLMENT

All students must confirm their enrollment with the Admissions Office prior to arriving on campus.

New undergraduate student or conditionally admitted undergraduate students should confirm enrollment by logging into https://apex.udayton.edu/confirm/index/login.

New graduate students and conditionally admitted graduate students should confirm enrollment by contacting gradadmission@udayton.edu or logging into https://apex.udayton.edu/confirm/index/login

2. HOUSING

The Center for International Programs does not arrange housing for students, and the University does not offer temporary housing. Make housing arrangements before you arrive.

LIVING ON CAMPUS IN UNIVERSITY HOUSING

If you will be a first- or second-year undergraduate or conditionally admitted student under the age of 21, you are required to live on campus.

To arrange housing on campus, complete the housing application online at myhousing.udayton.edu. Confirm your housing assignment with the Office of Housing and Residence Life before arriving in Dayton, Ohio.

LIVING OFF CAMPUS IN NON-UNIVERSITY HOUSING

Those students not required to live on-campus may wish to find accommodations off-campus. A list of off-campus residences is provided here as a courtesy. 

3. ARRIVING TO CAMPUS

Transportation from Dayton International Airport to the University of Dayton will be provided on Wednesday, May 8, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Last departure from airport will be at 4 p.m.). If you need transportation to the University, please plan to arrive to Dayton at this time. Students using this pick-up service will be dropped off at our office, where they can set up a mobile phone account, open a bank account, and purchase toiletries and other necessities, if they so desire. Staff will also direct students to their housing assignment.

If you arrive outside of the University-provided airport pick-up days and times, you must arrange transportation yourself. The University's regular business hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students arriving outside of these hours may trouble accessing University services, including housing.

LIBERTY TAXI PHONE NUMBERS 

You can call for a taxi once you arrive to the airport and one will arrive within 15 minutes of your request. The trip from the airport to the University of Dayton takes approximately 20 minutes and costs $30-$35 before tax. Payment in cash or credit card (must show passport) is acceptable. In the U.S., it is also customary to give a tip (gratuity) of 10-15% to the driver. For example, if your taxi ride costs $40, you should pay an additional $4-6 in gratuity.

HOTELS NEAR THE UNIVERSITY

If you are unable to access housing, you may need to stay in a hotel. We recommend making a reservation before arriving to the hotel. If this is not possible, call the hotel to check availability before you arrive there.

4. IMMUNIZATION

All students are required to show evidence of two Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccines. Additionally, if living in on-campus housing, students must provide dates of one Meningitis and three Hepatitis B vaccine dates OR sign the vaccine disclosure statement in Section B of the Health Requirements form. Additionally, students are required to complete a questionnaire to screen for Tuberculosis. Students must download the form, and the student's form must be filled out and signed by his or her physician and returned by fax or mail. Download the form here. If you fail to do this before you arrive, the University will require you to either submit the signed form or have the vaccinations and TB test in Dayton upon arrival at your expense. Students who are unable to do this or do not do this in a timely fashion will not be allowed to register for second semester classes.

ATTEND ORIENTATION AND IMMIGRATION CHECK-IN

BRIDGES: INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION

Bridges: International Student Orientation for undergraduate, graduate and exchange students is Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Kennedy Union ballroom. Bridges is mandatory. You will receive an immigration check-in ticket at Bridges. This ticket will direct you to a specific time and location for immigration check-in.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM TESTING AND ORIENTATION

Testing and orientation are mandatory for new IEP students. Placement testing for new students in the Intensive English Program begins Monday, May 13 at 8:30 a.m. (location to be determined). You will receive an immigration check-in ticket at placement testing. This ticket will direct you to a specific time and location for immigration check-in.

IMMIGRATION CHECK-IN TICKET

Immigration check-in tickets are only available at Bridges or IEP Placement Testing. If you do not complete immigration check-in, you jeopardize your ability to stay in the U.S. legally.

2. ATTEND THE WELCOME PARTY

A welcome party for all new international students will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. in McGinnis Center. Join us for free food and games.

After you arrive

1. STUDENT ID CARD

Obtain your student ID card in the Campus One Card office, located in the Powerhouse. You will need a picture ID (like your passport) to get the university student ID. The office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (eastern standard time).

2. UNIVERSITY COMPUTER LOG-IN INFORMATION

Obtain your University username and password online. This is also the log-in information you use to confirm your enrollment. You may also obtain your University username and password at the Computer Help Desk, located in Anderson Center room 028. The office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (eastern standard time). You will need your student ID in order to get your username and password from the Computer Help Desk.

3. REGISTERING FOR CLASSES

The process for registering for classes varies by your admission type.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Schedule classes through your dean’s office:
     College of Arts & Sciences, O’Reilly Hall 
     School of Business Administration, Miriam Hall 
     School of Education & Allied Professions, Chaminade Hall 
     School of Engineering, Kettering Labs

GRADUATE STUDENTS 

Schedule classes through your graduate program director. Select your program to find the program director’s contact information.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM STUDENTS

You will be registered for classes after you take the placement tests and attend orientations.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS

4. PAYING YOUR BILL

Students can pay their fees at the Bursar's office, located on the first floor of St. Mary's Hall.

UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY

The University of Dayton will be closed Monday, May 27, 2013, for a holiday. Many offices will be closed on this day.

Students living in University housing must bring their own linens. The Center for International Programs has a limited supply of linen packages available to new international students on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The use of cell phones is very common in the U.S. Some international students purchase new cell phones upon arrival to the U.S. so they can make both local phone calls and call home.

BANKING

International students should consider opening a bank account soon after they arrive in the U.S. so they have a safe place to keep their money. Some banks close to campus help international students open a bank account.
