January 2011 Faculty Briefs

Associate Professor Jeannette Cox's recent essay "When Are Employers Liable for Termination Decisions Made by Unbiased Managers But Prompted by Biased Managers?" was published in the Preview of United States Supreme Court Cases.


Professor Susan Brenner's recent article "Civilians in Cyberwarfare: Conscripts" was published in the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law. Brenner cowrote the paper with Leo L. Clarke, an attorney and former visiting professor at Dayton Law. The article is a companion piece to "Civilians in Cyberwarfare: Casualties," which was published by the Southern Methodist Science & Technology Law Review in the fall of 2010.

Brenner also spoke on "Safety, Privacy and Civility in Cyberspace" at the Fall Forum of the National Conference of State Legislatures on December 10 in Phoenix.


Ken Germain, the distinguished professorial practitioner in residence, will discuss "Trademark and Unfair Competition Law" as part of a review of intellectual property litigation in 2010 during the Annual Meeting of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the New York State Bar Association on January 25.


Associate Professor Pamela Laufer-Ukeles's address "The Cross-Dressing Women of the Military in Israel and the U.S." is available as an audio download on the University of Chicago Law School website. Laufer-Ukeles delivered the address during the conference "What Pertains to a Man? Transcending Gender Boundaries in Jewish and Israeli Law," held at the Chicago Law School on March 1, 2010, and sponsored by the school's Regulation of Family, Sex, and Gender Workshop.


Professor Maria Crist's law review article "The E-Brief: Legal Writing for an Online World" is cited in a new article, "E-Filing Holds Promise and Peril for Appellate Attorneys," published by Martin J. Siegel in the Texas Lawyer on December 7, 2010, and in the December ABA Journal Tech Report on December 9, 2010. Crist's article was published in the 2003 New Mexico Law Review.


Maureen Anderson, assistant professor and public access services and reference librarian, reviewed Dancing on the River: Navigating Life¿s Changes by Mark Susnow, a former trial attorney, life coach and author, on the AALL Spectrum blog, published by the American Association of Law Libraries.


Janet Hein, assistant dean and director of admissions and financial aid, is quoted in "UD, other Ohio law schools focus on diversity," an article in the Dayton Daily News examining the School of Law's pipeline agreement with Central State University. The agreement, which both schools signed earlier this fall, is designed to help prepare students for law school and recruit them to UDSL.


Professor Blake Watson is quoted in a Wall Street Journal article, "Governor Mum on Casino Dealings," on November 26, 2010, examining a controversial deal to allow an Indian tribe from Wisconsin to develop a casino in the state of New York.


Chris Martin, evening circulation assistant in the Zimmerman Law Library, was named the Association of College and Research Libraries Member of the Week for the week of November 29, 2010.
