Journalism

If you like to write and tell stories, if you want to help people understand science, technology, and the world around them, or if you think it's important for the citizens of a democracy to know and understand what is going on in their government, you could have a future in journalism!

The journalism concentration is focused on how news and other information is selected, gathered, prepared, and disseminated. But our students do much more than just understand these processes; they practice and develop the necessary skills to perform at a high professional standard. You will consider both the tradition and the reality of an unfettered press, which is the essence of the First Amendment, as you develop a firm grasp of legal and ethical expectations of the profession. Through class assignments, work on the Flyer News and internships, you will begin to gain experience in the working practices of professional journalists.

The study of jJournalism at the University of Dayton prepares you for reporting, editing, management and publishing positions across a variety of media platforms. Many of our students go on to careers as reporters, editors, newscasters, copy writers, script writers, technical writers and a growing variety of online journalism positions.
