Where Christmas Begins
The collections of the University of Dayton’s Marian Library – International Marian Research Institute include thousands of Nativities from around the world that reflect a variety of customs and traditions as they depict the story of Christ’s birth and presence. These crèches are expressions of how Christianity has shaped the culture and faith of people all over the world.
During each Christmas season, hundreds of sets from of our vast and diverse crèche collection are shown in all new exhibits on campus and throughout the community. The featured exhibits, shown on three floors of UD’s Roesch library building, have become an anticipated annual event – changing every year.
Exhibits are unveiled and activities begin the Saturday after Thanksgiving during our popular open house event. Designed for all ages and featuring many activities for children, this day has become a Thanksgiving tradition for families after the turkey has been eaten and the Friday shopping has been completed – a perfect ending to Thanksgiving and beginning of the Christmas season.

Girl Scout Patches
Girl Scouts of Western Ohio troops are invited to visit the exhibits of At the Manger: World Nativity Traditions this holiday season and obtain a participation patch.Guided tours for groups of 10 or more individuals may be requested by calling Clare Jones at 937-229-4214. When calling, let Clare know how many Girl Scouts will be in your group so that sufficient patches can be made available upon their visit. The patches are free while supplies last.

For the past 16 years, the University of Dayton’s crèche exhibit and outreach programs have been directed and funded by a dedicated group of volunteers who prepare displays, maintain settings, and handle transportation. Nativities are loaned throughout the Dayton area and beyond to museums, civic centers, and churches.
We need your help to continue this tradition. People can give time, monetary support, or both.
