Applications for Mobile Technology

Apps for mobile devices are some of the newest technologies available for learners!  The collection of apps found on our website come from our research and recommendations from students and staff.  If you choose to utilize any of these apps, you are responsible for any issues associated with the download or installation of software on your personal mobile device.  As with any type of technology, you should evaluate the application to determine if it useful to you and if it meets any specific accessibility needs.  When accessibility features are known, they will be published to this list.

Items may have both a 'free' version and a 'paid' version. Paid versions are noted with a $ as prices are subject to change.  An organizational note, both the categories and the selections within the categories are listed in alphabetical order.  If you have a specific area of interest, the topic list below is hyperlinked to that section of the list.



Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) 

Sono Flex (free/$) – ACC vocabulary app turns symbols into clear speech.  The have a Lite (free) version and a full version ($)

Verbally (free) - Verbally is an easy-to-use, comprehensive Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) app for the iPad. Verbally brings speech to those without and enables real conversation with its simple, intuitive design. Just tap in what you want to say and Verbally speaks for you.

Concept Mapping

Inspiration Maps (free/$) – brainstorm, analyze, take notes, study, etc. Lite version (free) allows you to create up to five diagrams.  Full version ($) is unlimited.

iThoughts ($) - a mind mapping tool for the iPad ($) and the iPhone ($) 

MindMeister (free) – create and share mind maps (requires free registration)

Mindjeg (free) – easily enter ideas, tasks and meeting notes into intuitive visual maps on the iPad platform

Mindjet (free) – This app is compatible with devices running Android 2.1 or later.  Mindjet organizes everything from thoughts and ideas to notes and to-do lists. The app contains many customizable features to make your mind maps and lists easy to read.

Popplet (free/$) - brainstorming and mind mapping with options for a Lite version (free) which has a limit of one popplet and the full version ($) which is unlimited.

SimpleMind + (free/$) - mind mapping software with a free version and fully functional version ($)

Math

FormulasHD for Calculus (free) - FormulusHD is the perfect study tool. It is a simple, easy to use, easy to navigate collection of the most important formulas and topics for high school and college students taking Calculus and Differential Equations.

Free Graphing Calculator (free/$) - Graphing Calculator turns your phone or iPod into an intuitive high-resolution function plotter and scientific calculator.

Khan Academy (free) – a library of over 3,200 on topics ranging from scientific topics to finance and history.  Versions available for Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, Statistics, and Trigonometry.

Note Taking/Writing 

AudioNote (free/$) – allows you to record notes and audio synced with note taking app.  The have a lite version (free) which limits to 10 minutes per note and 2 hours total OR a full version ($).  This is compatible with android and I devices.

Bamboo Paper (free) – Notebook: Natural handwriting on digital paper with use of Stylus (Free).

inClass (free) - Basic app for organizing your terms, courses and daily calendar but it also has the additional benefit of note-taking with the app with ability to record audio, insert or take a picture as well as file-share.

Note Everything (free/$) - This app is Compatible with Android devices 1.5 or later and is available for free or in a professional version.  It lets you type, speak, and paint notes right into the app, and you can send your notes anywhere.

PaperDesk (free/$) - Record audio while taking notes. They have lite version which allows 3 pages per note book (free) and full version ($) with unlimited pages in the notebooks. 

Save Meeting (free) - This free app is compatible with IOS running 4.3 or later and android devices running 2.2 or later.  With Save Meeting, you can record any meeting, lecture, or interview, use audio marks to bookmark the important details, and share the files with others. It can also transcribe important audio files.

Typ-O (free/$) - Includes word prediction, text-to-speech and corrects most common spelling mistakes. For the iPhone, they have a Typ-o Lite (free) and a Typ-o Writing is for Everyone ($).  They also have a Typ-o HD ($) for the iPad and iPhone.

Reading

Blio (free) - a cross-platform ebook reader, presents books using the publisher’s original layout.  Blio supports text to speech for content if text to speech is allowed within the content , provides synchronous highlighting and reading of selected text, and supports multiple reading views including fixed layout view, single page, dual page, and flowed view. Users can sync their content to five devices.  You can purchase text to speech voices separately.

CoolReader (free) is a app for devices running Android 1.5 or higher.  This app provides multiple dictionaries, text searching, bookmarking, export of bookmarks, and text to speech functionality.  CoolReader supports unprotected content in EPUB, FB2, TXT, DOC, RTF, HTML, CHM, TCR, PDB, and PML.

GoodReader ($) -  super-robust PDF reader for iPad where you can read virtually anything, anywhere - books, movies, maps, pictures.

Go Read (free) This application works your free BookShare membership to access a variety of reading material with text to speech (Android).

iAnnotate ($) - Read, annotate, and share PDFs.

iBooks (free) - iBooks is an amazing way to download and read books. You can flip through pages, bookmark or add notes to your favorite passages and some have audio visual features

inDAISY ($) -  multimedia talking DAISY book reader that allows users to enjoy different flavors of DAISY 2.02 and DAISY 3 books

Inkling (free)  - Digital college textbooks. A textbook case of innovation. Inkling brings the world’s best content to iPad with interactivity, social collaboration and simple ease-of-use. No more heavy, expensive textbooks to carry around campus. Inkling textbooks are more interactive, more flexible and cheaper.

Kindle (free) - download articles, books and more.  Note you have to purchase material, but the application is free

Learning Ally (free) - Gain instant access to Learning Ally's downloadable DAISY formatted books. Learning Ally members can explore our extensive library of more than 65,000 audiobooks that are designed for people with print and learning disabilities. Requires membership to Learning Ally to download books.

PDF-Notes - (free/$) Utilize pdf-notes to manage all the pdf files on your iPad. Fast display, quick page-turning even a thousand pages, useful finger-writing and email your notes to your friends. Easy importing PDF files through (DropBox, Email or Safari's). Free version has advertisements and paid version does not.

Read 2 Me - ($) - Read 2 Me is the FIRST AND ONLY iPhone App that allows full speech synthesis for an entire library of texts. You can even import you own URL based *.txt files straight into your bookshelf to be read aloud!

Read2Go ($)- From within Read2Go, you can browse, search, download, and read books directly from Bookshare using your Bookshare membership, as well as read DAISY books from other sources.

ZoomReader ($) - In combination with your iPhone’s built-in camera, ZoomReader lets you magnify and read printed text by first taking a picture of an object like a book or menu, then converts the image into text using state-of-the-art Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology.

Audio Memos (Free) – voice recorder

Dragon Dictation (free) - Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon® NaturallySpeaking® that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text or email messages.  This program is available on Android and I devices.

Mobile 112 ($) - requires an Android mobile phone or a tablet running the Android operating system.  This text to speech and dictation app announces and reads incoming text messages, reads typed content, translates text into other languages and reads text in the correct language if the correct text to speech engine is installed, allows you to create and save audio phrases and send this information via text or email; and supports optical character recognition, OCR via Abby Fine Reader.  This app also reads web pages and the application’s built in help file. Mobile 112 also supports Google translate. 

QuickVoice (free) - is the most popular, full-featured iPhone/iPad voice recorder available. Record ideas, voice memos, voice email, dictation, lists, meetings, classes, or entire lectures! For professional, educational, and personal use. 

Sound Note (free) - allows you to take notes and record audio, tracking what you type and draw while recording the audio. During playback, just tap a word and Sound Note will jump right to the proper time in the audio.

Quick Periodic Table of the Elements (free) – Four period tables summarize a variety of information.  Separate screen for all 118 elements provide 22 specific types of data.  Data can be organized by atomic number, symbol, or name.

Evernote (free) - helps you remember everything across all of the devices you use – notes, photos, to-do list, and voice reminders.  Its searchable! This is compatible with Android and I devices.

Ever Student (free) - This app is compatible with Android 1.6 or later.  It syncs with Evernote and allows you to easily organize all of your assignments and due dates into one, sleek, customizable planner.

Homework (free) - This app is  compatible with Android 1.6.  It keeps track of all of your due dates for you. See how much homework you’ve completed and the date of your next scheduled test.

iStudiez Lite (free) – allows you to organize your schedule, homework, summarize your classes, sending alerts, and guarding your data all in one place 

My Class Schedule (free) - This app is compatible with devices running Android 2.1 or later.  Use My Class Schedule to track homework due dates, upcoming exams, class schedules, and activities. You can color-coordinate your schedules.

myHomework (free/$)  - iPad and iPhonecompatible keep track of your homework, classes, projects and tests
