What is the Write Place?

Write Place, part of the Ryan C. Harris Learning Teaching Center, offers peer-to-peer writing support to students on any writing assignment and at any stage of the writing process.

Where is the Write Place located?

Write Place is located on the west end of the second floor of Roesch Library.

Who works in the Write Place?

Write Place is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students who are passionate about writing and want to help other students improve their writing process.  Currently, there are 25 consultants representing a wide variety of majors including Psychology, Marketing, Religious Studies, Physical Therapy, English and Education. 

Who comes to the Write Place for help?

Any student is welcome to visit the Write Place for help on any writing assignment.  Writers of all skill levels benefit from working with other writers.  Write Place is open to graduate and undergraduate students.

Is the Write Place just for English assignments?

No.  You can bring any writing assignment from any course. Any type of writing can be brought to a consultant.  Write Place consultants can address writing assignments from all disciplines including a Biology lab report, a business marketing plan, or an English research essay.  Creative writing can also be addressed as well as essays for graduate school applications.

Do I need an appointment?

No.  Simply drop-in to the Write Place during our business hours.  Business hours are:

  • Monday  through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Student-writers are served on a first-come, first-served basis; however, you can also schedule an appointment by contacting the Write Place Coordinator at (937) 229-2068 or email cklimo1@udayton.edu.

How much does it cost to use the Write Place services?

It is a FREE service to all university students!

How long do most sessions last?

A typical writing consultation will last approximately 30-50 minutes.  During peak semester times such as mid-term and finals week, sessions may be limited to 20-30 minutes so that everyone can be helped.

Is there a limit to the number of times I come to the Write Place?

There is no limit to how often you leverage the service. 

Can I drop-off my paper for review?

No.  During a consultation, you work one-on-one with a consultant.  We do not “fix” essays; we work with you to help you improve your writing and your skills as a writer. We do offer an online options if you would prefer to receive comments electronically, use our Digital Drop-Off service.

What should I bring to a session?

Please bring the instructor’s assignment sheet and a hard-copy draft of the essay you are working on. 

What can I do to prepare for a session?

It is a good idea to have some questions in mind about your writing.  What are you most concerned about?  What do you hope to get out of the consultation session? 

What if I don’t have a draft of my paper yet?  Can the Write Place help me?

Absolutely!  It is always helpful to brainstorm ideas with another person.  This is an important part of the writing process, often referred to as pre-writing.  Writing consultants are happy to help you generate ideas for your paper and share with you some writing strategies.

What aspects of writing can consultants help me with?

Writing consultants can assist with nearly any aspect of writing including organizing ideas, developing a thesis, clarifying or expanding points, developing evidence, following MLA or APA guidelines, and grammar.  Since consultants enjoy writing, they will often give you tips on how to enhance your writing process.

Can the Write Place provide me with adequate last minute help?  What if my paper is due in a few hours?

It is best to come to the Write Place in advance of your paper’s due date.  This ensures that the consultant can spend enough time to address your concerns.  Consultants will do their best to work with you given any time limitations.

Can a consultant predict my grade?

Write Place consultants strive to improve your writing. Write Place consultants are not instructors; they will NOT predict or guarantee what grade you will receive. Please talk directly with your instructor for an assessment of your writing.

What other services does the Write Place provide?

The Write Place offers an online consultation process called Digital Drop-off. You can submit up to 5 pages of content; a consultant will review your paper and provide feedback via the Microsoft Word Revision Tool within 48 hours of your submission.
