UDSL celebrates careers of seven retiring faculty members

05.10.2013 | Faculty, Law

On Friday April 19, approximately 300 people showed their appreciation for seven long-time faculty who are retiring at the end of the academic year. The "magnificent seven," E. Dale Searcy, Vernellia Randall, Cooley Howarth, Richard Sapjhire, Becky Cochran, Jeff Morris and Tom Hanley were honored for their combined 200 years of teaching more than 5000 students -- 800 courses over roughly 400 semesters.

Alumni from around the country who were unable to attend sent messages of appreciation, which were displayed on video boards during the event. Professor Blake Watson drew laughs from the audience with his presentation, which included a montage of tid-bits and creative photo-editing regarding each professor.

Dean McGreal shared impressions of his first meetings with each member during his interviews for the deanship. Sutton Smith '13 shared a message from the current student body in appreciation for the "innumerable lives they've changed."

The event also included an opportunity for alumni to show their appreciation with gifts in honor of their favorite faculty members.

The school of law hopes to continue to build upon the legacies of these "magnificent seven" by establishing endowed scholarships and programs to attract future students who are attracted to the quality and values of a UDSL education.
