High Performance Materials
This area enjoys broad participation by over 50 faculty and researchers on campus from the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering and the Research Institute. It encompasses nanomaterials, advanced composites, high temperature materials and the next generation ceramics and metals. The Nano Engineering, Science and Technology laboratory (NEST lab) is the cornerstone of this effort and continues to draw positive comments from visitors belonging to other prestigious universities and federal laboratories.
External research funding for this area continues to grow and now exceeds $40 million annually. According to the National Science Foundation, UD was the number one university in the United States in 2009 for federally funded materials research. UD has been recognized as a Center of Excellence in High Performance Materials by the State of Ohio and has received funding for an Ohio Research Scholar endowment in this area.
