Certifications

UD Campus Recreation offers a variety of certifications throughout the year. This is where you can find details about safety courses and certifications.

CPR and First Aid Classes

Campus Recreation staff will teach based on the American Red Cross certification class for CPR for the professional rescuer including first Aid and AED. Participants who demonstrate skills to specification will earn a two-year American Red Cross Certification.

PREREQUISITES / SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Participants must be at least 15 years of age prior to the final day of the course.   Parent signature is required for participants under the age of 18 years old.
  • Participants will be required to pass the American Red Cross lifeguarding prerequisites prior to begining the course.  They should take time prior to the start of the course to practice and prepare. Participants are required to swim 300 yards alternating front crawl and breaststroke.  There is no time limit for this portion, however they cannot stop at any point. Participants are also required to complete a brick retrieval skill. Starting in the water,  they will swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on their back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within one minute, 40 seconds. The third component of the preskills is the ability to tread water for 2 minutes with hands tucked in the underarms.
  • Participants that do not pass the prerequisites will not be permitted to enroll in the lifeguarding course

  • Preskills course completion list will be given to the welcome desk upon successful completion of the preskills.

Lifeguard Course

Are you interested in becoming a lifeguard?

Many pools require lifeguards to become American Red Cross certified prior to employment.  University of Dayton Campus Recreation is offering a lifeguard training course this spring through which you can obtain Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification.   Upon successful completion of both in water and classroom portions of the lifeguarding course, participants will receive a Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid certificate and a CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers certificate valid for two years.  Limited spots available, so register today!

Follow these steps to become a certified lifeguard through University of Dayton Campus Recreation!

  1. Select a date and register for preskills
  2. Successfully complete the preskills
  3. Register for the respective Lifeguard Course
  4. Successfully complete the Lifeguard Course
  5. Become certified!

Note: Participants must pass all written tests with a grade of 80% or better and successful completion of all skills tests in order to obtain certification.

Registration Details

Registration is open until the registration deadline or until the course is full.  Register in person at the UD RecPlex Main Office or Welcome Desk.  Participants must complete the registration form and present a photo ID with birthdate of the participant at the time of registration.  If a photo ID is not available, you must present official documentation that identifies the participants age.  Participant must bring photo ID or official verification to the first day of class.

To register, bring the completed form and copy of ID to the UD Campus Recreation RecPlex or you can fax your registration form and copy of ID to 937.229.2703 and pay via credit card.  Payment may be made via cash, check, VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.

All participants must purchase a copy of the 2012 edition of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual is available to view online at americanredcrss.org if you would like to review prior to the first day of class. It is required that they bring their manual to class each day.  Laptops are not permitted during class.

Refunds are subject to approval by UDCR administration.

Lifeguard Review Course

Has your lifeguard certification recently expired or will expire in the near future? Then this is the course for you. This course is intended for individuals that need to renew their American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. All skills and written test material (including: Lifeguarding, CPR, AED and First Aid) will be tested in a shorter, challenge format. The purpose of a review course is to give individuals the opportunity to review the course content within a formal setting. The review course format optimizes a participant’s ability to prepare for the final written exam as well as the final skills tests. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AEDfor Professional Rescuers certificates valid for two years.

To be eligible for the Lifeguard Training Review course, participants must have valid Lifeguard and CPR/AED certifications. Participants must provide copies of certifications at the time of course registration. Individuals that do not have eligible certificates may not participate in the LG Review course; they can only participate in a full course.

Must bring a copy of the 2012 edition of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Manual to the review course as well.
