Paddling Programs

FREE POOL PADDLING: MARCH 18TH AND 20TH FROM 7:30 – 9:00 P.M.

As our paddling ponds are freezing over, join us indoors for an introduction to kayaking in the RecPlex Aquatics Center. Become more familiar with different types of recreational kayaks and paddling gear. This class will provide a solid progression of skills that will have your ready for the paddling season in the spring!      

FREE BATTLESHIP BOOT CAMP: APRIL 1ST AND 3RD FROM 7:00 – 8:30 P.M.

Is this your first time participating in battleship? Are you curious on how to best maneuver near and around your opponent’s boat? Are you simply looking to have some fun in canoes? If so, this clinic is for YOU! In the RecPlex Aquatics Center, this is a terrific training ground to learn basic canoe strokes and balancing techniques to help stay afloat and in control as you toss buckets of water to sink your opponent’s ship during Intramural Battleship on Sunday, April 6th.

Get out and try flat-water kayaking and canoeing at Old River Park. Basic paddling instruction will be provided. Additionally, short yoga or Zumba classes will occur on the lawn of the park. No paddling, yoga, or Zumba experience required.

FREE FIELD DAY: APRIL 4TH FROM 3:00 –7:00 P.M.

The afternoon will feature a variety of outdoor recreational activities to take advantage of all the park has to offer including: canoeing and kayaking, bootcamp class demos, TRX suspension training, disc golf, cornhole, and other informal activities. 

FREE TRY IT KAYAKING AT RIVERSCAPE: APRIL 12TH FROM 12:00 – 4:00 P.M.

Open to all UD students! Join Dr. Curran and other UD students for flat-water kayaking at RiverScape MetroPark. No paddling experience required. This event is in collaboration with River Stewards 2014 Cohort, Campus Recreation Miami Conservancy District, and Whitewater Warehouse.

Come join us at Old River Park and learn to kayak. Become more familiar with parts of a kayak and paddling gear. Learn how to properly fit and enter and exit and kayak safety. Then we will practice the basics of boat control including posture, balance, and simple stokes. Build confidence on the water to enjoy this wonderful sport to its fullest.

FREE UD’S BIG READ: WILD BY CHERYL STRAYED: MARCH 26TH FROM 12 – 1 P.M.

Join us for a free book discussion sponsored by Roesch Library as part of the community "Big Read" program. This year’s pick is Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, the story of the twenty-two year old Cheryl Strayed, an inexperienced hiker, who decides to hike the 1,100 mile Pacific Crest Trail. Share your thoughts about the book, hear stories of other’s adventures, and enjoy light refreshments.

COOKING IN CAMP: THURSDAY, APRIL 17TH FROM 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. (COST: $5.00 )

Dine with us! Come learn how to cook tasty meals that you can make on your next outdoor trip or at home in your kitchen. We will meet in the Outdoor Engagement Center to prepare some of our staff’s favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes using camping stoves and cooking equipment. The food will be vegetarian friendly with meat options available. Cost: $5/person

FREE CAMPING BASICS: MARCH 27TH FROM 7:30 – 9:00 P.M.

To attend, meet at the Outdoor Engagement Center (437 Stonemill) at 7:30 p.m.

Interested in going camping but not sure where to start? Join us as we share basic skills and the necessary equipment to help you plan a successful and enjoyable camping trip. We will highlight equipment that is available through our outdoor equipment rental program in the Outdoor Engagement Center so you will be all set for your next adventure. Participants will also receive a free OEC t-shirt and 20% discount towards their next rental purchase.

FREE BIKE TRIP TO 2ND ST. MARKET: MARCH 15TH FROM 11 – 1:30 P.M.

The group is meeting in front of the RecPlex at 11:30 a.m.

Did you know that the Dayton area has over 330 miles of bike paths? Do you also need to go to the grocery store? Join us and upDAYTON on a bike ride to 2nd Street Market, where you can help us explore some of Dayton’s bike paths, enjoy a local lunch, and pick up some much needed groceries.

Rock Wall - Climbing Programs

FREE BELAY CLINIC

This free clinic will teach you proper belaying skills, basic climbing and knot tying techniques, and bouldering safety. At the end of the second class, participants will complete a belay test in order to belay other climbers.
