Break away from campus life with other students on a weekend long camping trip! We offer excellent opportunity for adventure and fun through our planned trips and outings into outdoor areas surrounding the University of Dayton community. From kayaking the Great Miami River to scenic hikes, Outdoor Education provides students and faculty with the means to get active and learn about the natural world around them.

UD's Big Read: Wild by Cheryl Strayed
March 26th from 12:00pm to 1:00pm
Join us for a free book discussion sponsored by Roesch Library as part of the community "Big Read" program. This year’s pick is Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, the story of the twenty-two year old Cheryl Strayed, an inexperienced hiker, who decides to hike the 1,100 mile Pacific Crest Trail. Share your thoughts about the book, hear stories of other’s adventures, and enjoy light refreshments.
Potluck Backcountry Cooking
Thursday, April 20th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm
Dine with us! Come learn how to cook tasty meals that you can make on your next outdoor trip or at home in your kitchen. We will meet in the Outdoor Engagement Center to prepare some of our staff’s favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes using camping stoves and cooking equipment. The food will be vegetarian friendly with meat options available. Cost: $5/person
Free Camping Basics
February 20th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm & March 27th from 7:30pm to 9:00pm
Interested in going camping but not sure where to start? Join us as we share basic skills and the necessary equipment to help you plan a successful and enjoyable camping trip. We will highlight equipment that is available through our outdoor equipment rental program in the Outdoor Engagement Center so you will be all set for your next adventure. Participants will also receive a free OEC t-shirt and 20% discount towards their next rental purchase.
Free Brike Trip to 2nd Street Market
March 22nd from 11:00am to 1:30pm
Did you know that the Dayton area has over 330 miles of bike paths? Do you also need to go to the grocery store? Join us on a bike ride to 2nd Street Market, where you can help us explore some of Dayton’s bike paths, enjoy a local lunch, and pick up some much needed groceries.
Free Bike to Yoga at Carillon Park
April 12th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Carillon Historic Park showcases the city of Dayton’s rich heritage of creativity and invention and it’s just across the street from campus! Come with us on short bike ride to Carillon Park to learn more about the park to then participate in a relaxing yoga class under the shady tress of Carillon Park. No prior yoga experience necessary.
Free Safe Cycling Workshop
March 25th & April 22nd
Join us for a classroom discussion as we build upon the basics of cycling and introduce the essentials for riding for recreational or commuting purposes in Dayton. We will cover the bicycle fitting tips, helpful gear, route selection, road rules and more.
National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Info Session
February 17th from 4:00pm to 8:30pm
Learn more about the National Outdoor Leadership School, the leaders in wilderness education. More than 220,000 NOLS students have mastered outdoor skills, leadership, and environmental ethics in the world’s most spectacular wild classrooms. There will be an info table in the RecPlex lobby from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by a presentation in the RecPlex Meeting Room B from 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
