How to Join
Joining a Greek organization is a fun and exciting time. A little background information is critical to help you determine which recruitment you may choose to go through. Each Values-Based Greek organization on campus is governed by an overarching council.
- The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing body for seven (7) of UD's values-based fraternal organizations.
- The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the governing body for three (3) of UD's historically Black values-based fraternities and sororities.
- The National Panhellenic Council (Panhel) is the governing body for six (6) of UD's values-based sororities.
These councils aid the chapter organizations in the areas of recruitment, academics, service, public relations, financial and educational programming, and risk management. By joining one of the Values-Based Greek chapters, you automatically become a member of the council and are encouraged to participate.
You can start the process of joining a Values-Based organization by learning about and participating in recruitment; more specific instructions are listed below.
What is recruitment?
Recruitment is the period when fraternities and sororities actively seek out new members who have values that align with those of the organization. This includes a series of events offering members and potential members the opportunity to get to know each other. (“Rush” is an outdated term that referred to the practice of fraternities literally "rushing" to the train station to meet the newest members of the freshman class of a college or university and pinning their fraternity colors on the freshmen to identify them as a potential member of that fraternity). The current and appropriate process of dynamically selecting new members through coordinated events and gatherings is what we sponsor here at UD as recruitment.

Eligibility Requirements
All University of Dayton students must meet the following requirements in order to be eligible to receive a bid and become initiated into a fraternity or sorority:
- complete at least one semester of college (12 credit hours)
- be in good disciplinary standing with the University
- have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 (Most chapters have higher GPA requirements)
- abide by all University and Council recruitment rules and policies
If you are unsure of your eligibility, please contact Greek Life and Leadership Programs at (937) 229-4114. Grades and discipline status are verified with other campus offices.
Eligibility is verified throughout the registration process. If you are eligible, you will not receive any notification from Greek Life and Leadership Programs. If you are not eligible, you will be notified as soon as possible, and will not be able to attend further recruitment events. You may re-register in a following semester.
Join an IFC Fraternity
1.) Register for men's fraternity recruitment (January 29 - February 8, 2013), by attending one of the two Information Kick-off Nights.

2.) Visit Fraternity Events
Upon registration, you will be given a list of all the registered recruitment events from each chapter, and each organization will be able to direct you to its events. We encourage you to visit as many as you can from all available fraternities. You may choose to register after attending one or more recruitment events; you must register via any method listed above by Friday, February 8, 2013 at 4:30pm. (Note: Some fraternity's final events may take place on Sat/Sun, February 9/10, 2013, after the registration cutoff, and you may certainly attend these.)
3. Pursue Membership at the end of the Recruitment Period
A bid is a formal invitation to join an IFC fraternity, given by an individual fraternity that wishes to offer you membership. You must register with IFC by February 8, 2013 at 4:30pm to receive a bid to join. All bids are given out after the conclusion of the recruitment period, on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, between the hours of 5:00 and 10:00pm. This is a standard date and time for all IFC fraternities. A fraternity uses its own internal constitution and by-laws to determine membership qualifications, some of which are not known until after becoming a full active member.
A fraternity will be able to inform you of its GPA requirement that may be higher than the University minimum of 2.25.
Join an NPHC Fraternity or Sorority
Students who are interested in joining a historically Black fraternity or sorority will participate in the intake process for the individual organization that they are interested in joining. Each organization conducts membership intake according to their own national guidelines, however, these standards vary and intake activities are held at times determined by each organization. Most NPHC organizations require a minimum grade point average and a minimum number of earned college credit hours in order to participate in intake. The intake process is typically short in duration.
Join a Panhellenic Sorority
The formal recruitment process for Panhellenic sororities takes place at the beginning of the spring semester each year. There is a $35 registration fee that all students registering for Panhellenic recruitment must furnish.
