Distinguished Speaker Series

The Distinguished Speakers Series strives to complement the four essential efforts enumerated in the University’s Statement of Purpose, namely: teaching, research, serving as a critic of society, and rendering public service.  Working in cooperation with campus and community co-sponsors, the Distinguished Speakers Series Committee endeavors to select distinguished speakers who, in the course of their campus visit, will act as catalysts for purposeful, critical discussion of contemporary issues.  In carrying out its mission, the Committee attains diversity of viewpoints and opinions by drawing its membership from the faculty of the college and schools, students, as well as from adjunct and administrative units of the university and students.

“Distinguished”, in the context of the series, refers to speakers with ideas of substance and weight to offer on a topic of national interest or vital particular interest to our students, faculty, staff, and members of the Dayton community.   Speakers should have serious credentials in the field with some high level of recognition as an expert on the topic.  The primary purpose of speakers is to address audiences in their areas of expertise and so complement the educational purposes and mission of the University.
