Any student to whom a physician has
dispensed a desensitizing antigen ("allergy vaccine") for injection may
store the vaccine at the Health Center and receive injections on schedule from the
Health Center nurses. A charge of $10 is made for each allergy injection visit.
Charges are filed with the Bursar and are due and payable at the Bursar’s Office.
The Health Center handles no money.
For the safety of patients and the
legal protection of the University of Dayton, the following policies and procedures
regarding allergy vaccine are strictly observed at all times.
- Allergy vaccine is given only in accordance with written instructions
signed by the prescribing physician. Such instructions must include, as an
absolute minimum, a clearly intelligible order or dosage schedule for each
antigen or mixture, indicating the amount to be administered and the interval
between injections. Each injection vial must be labeled with sufficient
information to distinguish it from all other vials dispensed to the same patient
and to permit accurate interpretation of directions. When labeling or
instructions are inadequate or ambiguous, allergy vaccine cannot be administered
until clarification is obtained IN WRITING from the prescribing
physician. Word of mouth instructions from the patient and telephoned
instructions from the physician are NEVER acceptable. However, physicians’ orders can be
faxed to the Health Center at 937-229-3107.
- Allergy vaccine is administered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday. No vaccine can be given if a physician is not on
the premises.
- After receiving any desensitizing antigen, the
patient must remain in the Health Center for at least 15 minutes. Any patient
who refuses to comply with this regulation will be disqualified for further
administration of vaccine at the Health Center.
- In the event of any untoward reaction to allergy
vaccine, the Health Center staff will use its best judgment in treating the
reaction. Treatment will include, as far as possible, compliance with
instructions provided by the prescribing physician. The Health Center staff
may discontinue administration of antigen to any patient after an untoward
reaction, and require written instructions from the prescribing physician
regarding future doses.
- If the time elapsed since the last allergy vaccine is twice the prescribed
interval or more, no further injections will be given until a WRITTEN order
has been received from the prescribing physician, indicating either approval of
continuation of the original schedule or a revision of dosage. Obtaining such an
order is the responsibility of the patient. Written orders may be faxed to the
Health Center. A student who has received vaccine while at home during a vacation
must present evidence of this IN WRITING from the
administering physician before continuing the injection schedule at the Health
Center.
- Ordering a new supply of vaccine when a vial is empty
is the responsibility of the patient.
- The University of Dayton Health Center reserves the
right to decline to administer allergy vaccine, or to discontinue
administration once it has been begun, to any student, for any reason, at any
time. The University of Dayton and its employees cannot be responsible for
adverse consequences of allergy injections administered in compliance with the
prescribing physician’s orders, or for loss of vaccine stored at the Health
Center.
