For Parents of College Students
For Parents of College Students, regarding their son or daughter’s medical visits and records:
For most students entering college, being ill or injured and having to make their own decisions regarding the need for medical care is a new situation. Typically their parents have made arrangements for physician appointments, so making and keeping an appointment is a new development skill. Students who desire an appointment at the Health Center must call for themselves; parents or friends cannot make appointments for them.
Because most college students are legal adults (age 18 or over), their medical records are protected by law from disclosure without consent from the student. A student may give written consent to discuss a visit regarding a particular diagnosis with their parents, but we require separate consent for different visits. Students may request a copy of their visit note or medical record* which they may then share with their parents if they choose to do so.
The staff of the University of Dayton Health Center includes 7 registered nurses and 2 board-certified family physicians. Our goal is to provide top-quality care for all of our students. We are also happy to provide referrals to local specialists as needed or desired by students.
We encourage parents to make sure your son or daughter have a copy of your family’s health insurance and pharmacy cards at school, and that they bring these to appointments both at the Health Center, and if they should need medical care elsewhere.
*A charge may apply for printing records.
