Our Competitive Edge

Students Taking the Lead

The Kern Family Foundation’s support also provides opportunities for students to spread the EML philosophy on campus. Electrical engineering major Anna Hecht ’19 and four other seniors sit on the executive team of the student-run EMpwr organization, hosting student workshops and competitions that embody the KEEN spirit.

“We’ve done a couple of innovation competitions on campus where we propose real-life problems and students get into teams and come up with a solution,” Hecht said. “At the one we held last year, one of the prompts was to create a device, solution or approach that would help someone with a disability be more productive in the workplace. One of the teams came up with a one-handed, circular keyboard for someone with one arm.”

During competitions, Hecht and her team have also collaborated with the School of Business Administration, giving student teams guidance on creating business models for their ideas.

“Our student team had a lot of freedom to run with EMpwr,” Hecht said. “We had on-campus advisers who helped us work through what we wanted the club to be and how we can use the values of the KEEN framework, actually making them visible on campus.”

The University of Dayton, in partnership with KEEN and the EMpwr Student Chapter, held a half-day workshop for students around the topic of "What I Wish I'd Learned in College."
