The Full UD Experience

First-year students Travis Rallings and Breven Perry both grew up in the Dayton area — Rallings in north Dayton and Perry in Eaton. Both aspired to attend the University of Dayton but anticipated financial struggles. Thanks to donor support for local students, a quality education in their hometown — and the full UD experience — is now possible.

As a Dayton Early College Academy student, Rallings knew Fitz Hall. While taking college-level courses at UD during high school, he became familiar with the rest of campus. “It already felt like home,” he said.

Despite this affinity, he planned on commuting. He had received scholarships that buffered the cost of tuition, but the cost of room and board was too steep. Then, the Schuerman Family Scholarship came through. It covers housing and meals for DECA graduates. “It gave me a chance to live on campus and actually get the true college experience,” Rallings said.

Bill Schuerman, who set up the scholarship with his wife, Ann, knows that living on campus is important. “The learning that takes place outside the classroom plays a major educational role as young people strive to establish independence and autonomy, develop emotional stability, clarify values, find intimacy, consider career choices and learn to live in communities that are often far different and more diverse than the ones they grew up in,” Bill said.

Like Rallings, Perry planned on commuting to campus — right up until graduating from Eaton High School. “I was walking through the hallway at school and my high school counselor pulled me into his office. I thought he was just doing one final check to see if I’d picked a college or something like that. Then, he told me about the Cobb Scholarship. I couldn’t believe it.”

Established by Steve ’86 and Molly ’83 Cobb, the Cobb Family Scholarship covers Perry’s room and board, enabling him to live on campus — and provides him and one other student with ties to Eaton, Ohio with a full-tuition scholarship. “When I told my mom about it, she cried,” Perry said. “I can’t even put into words how thankful I am. It’s changed my life.”
