The principal responsibility of the departmental administrative assistant is to the chairperson of the department for departmental administrative work. Times may arise during the term when the administrative assistant is not fully occupied or when the normal work slackens. At such times he or she may do work for the members of the faculty. Departmental guidelines should exist to regulate this type of work.
If priorities for service of an administrative assistant to the faculty are assigned they could include letters of recommendation written by the faculty, official communications between the faculty member and outside funding agencies, official work in connection with academic societies, and other communications when the faculty member speaks for the department. Personal typing quizzes, teaching needs, personal research is considered a normal professional responsibility of the faculty member, and the administrative assistant will provide whatever assistance he or she can, but the University's resources limit the availability of such a service.
