D*CLARE: Dayton Community Language Activities for Resident Enrichment
Fall of 2014 the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, and the Criminal Justice Studies Program piloted the D*CLARE Program with a class of freshman students. The objective of the program was to bring UD students and Dayton area refugees together while building skills in interaction and language. As was hoped, both parties benefited from the pilot semester – refugees gained valuable practice communicating in English, while students gained valuable practice interacting with diverse groups, which will be exceedingly important to these students as they progress through school and enter their chosen career fields.
We are proud to share that due to this success, in the fall of 2015 we will be expanding the program to two evenings a week. Working in conjunction with the Miami Valley Catholic Social Services location on Brown Street, we will be bringing youths from the Dayton community together with our students once again, and we invite you to contact our offices to inquire about participation in the program.
There are many other ways you can contribute to this cause in our community, which can be found on the Miami Valley Catholic Social Services Website.
